    Manchester United 1-0 Wigan

    Alan Shearer
    Ex-England captain on BBC One

For 44 minutes Wigan were superb. They were organised, compact, tight.

It was one long ball and Fellaini pinned Connolly at the back post. It was a very good header

I would say for the first 30 minutes Manchester United were really poor.

Martial was really poor and it was not until Mourinho moved Martial out to the left that they managed to get runners in behind.

Wigan will feel hard done to by that half-time score, but they will also no doubt know that Manchester United are unlikely to play so poorly again after the break.

Harrison Short: See what happens when you cross a ball over head height! Not the most complex tactic in the world

Marcus Tongue: All that criticism of Fellaini eh, everyone... Let's leave it there.

Marouane Fellaini hasn't scored in the Premier League since December 2015 but he chips in with the odd cup goal here and there. Route One, Plan B.

Right on cue there is the big man.

    Route one.

It is almost as if they said 'forget about this passing, just put it in the box and Fellaini will put it in the net'.

He may not offer much at times but there is one thing Marouane Fellaini is good at and that's a far-post header.

Bastian Schweinsteiger launches the ball to the back stick, the Belgian pins young right-back Callum Connolly and nods into the net from maybe six yards out on the angle.

    Poor goal to concede.

Nathan Godfrey: Martial. Not good enough.

Dave W: Looking at the passing you would think this Man Utd team have never played together. Then again they probably haven't

Wolfy: Some of the Utd players look like they've never played football before...

  10. WATCH AGAIN: "Huge chance for Manchester United"published at 16:42 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2017

    Manchester United 0-0 Wigan

Mkhitaryan won't want to see this again. Fosu-Mensah basically puts it on a plate for the Armenian but he can only slice wide from about three yards out.

    Manchester United 0-0 Wigan

Another half chance for Wigan as the impressive Sam Morsy and Michael Jacobs link up on the edge of the area, it comes to Jacobs and he miskicks totally.

The Rothwell Ronaldo not really living up to his billing there.

    But good stuff from Wigan.

  12. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 37 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Wigan

Chris Smalling pulls Dan Burn's shirt from the Wigan set-piece, and clambers over the massive Wigan defender too. Nothing given.

Sloppy from Luke Shaw to curtail a dangerous Manchester United attack. Radio 5 live just remind everyone that United paid £32m for the left-back.

    THIRTY-TWO.

Marouane Fellaini, another expensive misfit, pulls over Sam Morsy again and surely he'll be booked this time?

    No!

    Manchester United 0-0 Wigan

Manchester United are now starting to apply some pressure as a Wayne Rooney free-kick is nodded behind for a corner. Anthony Martial tries to turn it back in but he's crowded out.

    Martin Keown

That is by far Manchester United's best passage of play.

Fosu-Mensah whips it across and Mkhitaryan surely has to put that in.

You feel Martial is better when he comes into that deeper position.

  16. CLOSE!published at 31 mins

    Manchester United 0-0 Wigan

Ah he should score! By far and away the best chance as a lightning break from Manchester United ends with Timothy Fosu-Mensah delivering a peach of a low cross, Henrikh Mkhitaryan is free beyond the far post and should tap it in, but slices it wide.

Will Grigg would have buried that.

  17. Magic of the Cup?published at 30 mins

Chris Smalling (42) has had the most touches of the ball in the opening half hour.

Michael Jacobs wins a free-kick for Wigan which comes to nothing, Henrikh Mkhitaryan leads a United counter and Dan Burn slides in and whips it from his toes.

The splendidly-named Max Power now shoots from midfield for Wigan, hits it clean and firmly, but it is an easy save for Sergio Romero. United then win a corner. Game livening up.

Mata just couldn't get over it. We have grown used to him putting that in the back of the net.

    He will be disappointed.
