Manchester United have got to do more to stop these Southampton crosses coming into the box. They have survived a scare with that disallowed goal but only just got away with it.

If Southampton needed any encouragement that they can cause Man Utd problems then we have already seen it.

Southampton's fans are really turning up the volume here as their team makes the early pace. Lots of movement and invention up front backed up by plenty of energy in midfield.

Claude Puel will take real encouragement from this.

No doubt about it, Southampton are causing Manchester United no end of problems from down the flanks.

United cannot get close and the Saints players are whipping in some delightful crosses.

An excellent start made by Claude Puel's side.

What a let off that is for Jose Mourinho's men. United's defenders still seem to be in Manchester.

Poor decision. It should have been a goal. It wasn't offside. No way was that offside.

  7. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 11 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Southampton

Southampton have the ball in the back of the neck...

...but the assistant referee's flag is up.

Firstly, Ryan Bertrand gets down the left and plays a ball which flies right across the box. It is collected by right-back Cedric Soares, whose low cross is converted by Manolo Gabbiadini.

The Italian is ONSIDE, whereas Bertrand - behind him - is the one off.

    Controversy.

Southampton get a succession of corners but cannot make anything of them. United clear their lines with Paul Pogba's booming clearance.

10 minutes gone, still goalless. Southampton will be happy with that.

Little Nathan Redmond, with his blonde mohawk, weaves inside and out before striking a low left-footed shot at goal.

It takes a nick off United defender Marcos Rojo and away for a corner kick.

One: You can't give Ibrahimovic that amount of time to collect, turn and lay to off to Pogba and, two: you can't give Pogba that much time to have a shot on goal.

Both sides are working hard but Ibrahimovic will cause Southampton problems if they keep on allowing him space and time.

Southampton are sitting back and allowing Manchester United time and space on the ball in their own half.

Once United cross the middle white line, that is when the Saints players spring into action, sprinting at the men in red to close them down.

  13. CLOSE!published at 5 mins

    Man Utd 0-0 Southampton

First strike of the game is by the world's most expensive player Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman strides forward with his gangly legs and lets fly with a rocket of a drive from 30 yards out, but it is straight at Fraser Forster who punches the ball away.

Southampton were slow to close Pogba down there.

Hairy moments at the back for United.

Midfielder James Ward-Prowse plays a brilliant ball into the box across the six yard area, United skipper for the day Chris Smalling lets it run, but Saints front man Manolo Gabbiadini cannot get on the end of it.

That will give Claude Puel encouragement.

The national anthem at Wembley is being sung by British soprano Emily Haig. She's opted for a blue number, is she a Chelsea fan?

Anyway, her vocals are rousing. Players and supporters are getting pumped.

    Kick-off is minutes away.

  20. How much will Van Dijk be missed?published at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 26 February 2017

Man Utd v Southampton (16:30 GMT)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Wembley

Southampton's £40m-rated central defender Virgil van Dijk is missing through injury - but they will take heart from the performance of young Jack Stephens under immense pressure in the semi-final second leg at Anfield. He must produce again today.

Manager Claude Puel is an under-stated figure who has had his critics since succeeding Ronald Koeman in the summer - but he will write his name in Southampton's history forever if he can secure their first major trophy since 1976.

Flags are being flown and red and white balloons are bouncing around the Southampton end at Wembley. It's a little more subdued in the Manchester United section but it is fair to say those supporters are more used to these occasions in recent years, winning the FA Cup here at Wembley last May.
