Well there you have it - Huddersfield Town, the little Terriers, will be playing in the Premier League next season.

We had to wait a long time to get the result, but it was all worth it for the West Yorkshiremen, all thanks to some German engineering from the penalty spot.

A shootout is always a cruel way for things to be decided and for losers Reading it will be a fifth straight season in the second tier of English football.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Huddersfield skipper Tommy Smith said he felt like he could "run a mile" despite being on crutches.

"I couldn't be prouder, happier, it's an incredible feeling, I can't find the words," said Smith, who was carried off on a stretcher in the second half.

"We've worked incredibly hard going about our business quietly, I can't think of a club that deserves it more."

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds, ex-Huddersfield goalkeeper Matt Glennon said this was a special milestone for the club.

"You don't get these moments much in your career, so when they arrive you have to milk them for all their worth," he said.

"Brookie the kitman has been there through the hard times, 24/7, so this is for him, this is for everyone involved in the club."

Huddersfield know how to win penalty shootouts at Wembley.

In 2012, the Terriers' League One play-off final against Sheffield United went to penalties - all the way through the team to the two goalkeepers.

While Huddersfield keeper Alex Smithies tucked his away, his opposite number for the Blades Steve Simonsen blazed his over the bar - at the same end of Wembley that Huddersfield won the shootout today.

Once the heartbreak wears off for Reading, attention may turn to next season.

They may be favourites for automatic promotion, if, and it's a big if, they are able to keep hold of manager Jaap Stam.

You fear there may be some Premier League clubs sniffing around the Dutchman in the off-season.

But former owner and now club director Sir John Madejski seems to think he will continue at the Madejski Stadium.

Next season's top flight will contain two clubs that have never experienced the Premier League before.

It's 45 years since Huddersfield were in the top division and 34 for Brighton, who were promoted automatically alongside champions Newcastle.

They will be the 48th and 49th clubs to play Premier League football.

Jaap Stam continued:

"If you don't want to play in this game, you should go and play in the amateur leagues.

"You could see at certain times the game was a bit reserved from both sides. You can never say to a player go and play the same as in the league because of the atmosphere.

"Hopefully we can do well next season, but to be honest I don't really want to think about that. We have this to overcome. We have our holidays and after that we'll think about next season."

Reading manager Jaap Stam on Sky Sports:

"You want to end the season well. It's a nice season but the final is there to be won.

"We worked very hard today, it wasn't easy. To lose on penalties is hard.

"I've experienced it myself in my career. It's the cherry on the cake to win the game. But it's nobody's fault.

"I'm very proud of the team, what they've done, how hard they worked. They deserved to be here."

"I can't describe these feelings, because we aren't speaking now about a dream, it is a reality.

"Goalkeepers go out as heroes for saving them, but my four heroes are the boys who stuck it in the back of the net.

"It was 120 minutes of grit and determination.

"Huddersfield Town are in the Premier League - it's unbelievable."

David Wagner continued:

"We tried a lot of small details to bring this club forward - usually you need three or four years to do what we've done.

"I am so happy because when I arrived people said I had no experience, no experience of British football, no experience of players - I always had to fight against that.

"It's proved experience is important but not everything. It's heart and desire.

"We only wanted to play this season to our limits, and now we know where our limit is."

Huddersfield boss David Wagner on Sky Sports:

"A lot of the pundits wrote us off before the season.

"Over the season I thought we could do a little bit more, I thought around Christmas when we'd played everyone we had a chance.

"What happened is an unbelievable story - a fairytale."

Gerry: Huddersfield Town in the Premier League. Sounds good.

Wayne Andrews: But what fate awaits Huddersfield? Promoted with a negative goal difference? I fear the worst.

Scott Ellis: Well done to Huddersfield. Brilliant result!

Terriers chairman Dean Hoyle continued:

"It's a crazy world. Reading have lost on penalties and that's really cruel. The prize is so big and I feel for them.

"It's our turn. We deserve it because of the way we've done it.

"We can give lots of people hope, smaller clubs that keep believing - you can achieve the impossible."

Huddersfield chairman Dean Hoyle told Sky Sports:

"I'm so emotional. To say I've been supporting this club since 1969, to be a Premier League team now - dreams come true.

"It's huge what it means for Huddersfield, we're on the big stage. It proves you don't have to blow your brains to get promoted.

"We've done it the right way."

Huddersfield midfielder Aaron Mooy, on loan from Manchester City, on Sky Sports:

"It's hard to speak right now. The penalty shootout wasn't nice but we hung in there and gave it everything.

"From the first day they treated me like i was an actual signing, I'm very grateful and glad to be part of it.

"I don't know what my plans for next season are yet. I'm just trying to enjoy the night. I didn't want to talk about it until the season was over."

Huddersfield now give the old school 'Dortmund wave' that David Wagner has got them doing in front of their fans.

It's a hallmark of the atmosphere Wagner has created at the club, and the connection with the fans that he and the team have.
