On this performance and others there is no way that Hull is destined for the drop.

Oumar Niasse's last goal before tonight was for Lokomotiv Moscow in December 2015.

It came in Albania of all places, against Skenderbeu in the Europa League.

    Hull City

Hull manager Marco Silva: "It was a good win but not enough for our goal. It is important to win the game but the result in the first leg caused problems for us.

"It was a good performance again, a good attitude and we controlled the game in large periods against a big team. It is impossible at this moment to feel really happy.

"The goal we conceded is not a normal goal, we lost control at the vital moment.

"It is important that we won the game. We have won three games in a row at home and when I arrived we had won once in two months. I congratulated the players in the dressing room.

"Sure I hope to improve the squad with three or four players. We need them. We have 15 or 16 players, it's not normal at this level."

Despite progressing, Manchester United’s 17-game unbeaten run has come to an end, with their first defeat against Hull since November 1974.

I must admit, Man Utd are still a work in progress, of that there can be no doubt.

They did not play well tonight, they will play a lot better, but there has been real progress.

They seriously lost their way after Sir Alex Ferguson - they are some way towards that but still some way off it.

Ben Virdee: Mourinho must do something with these players when it comes to big games, whenever we need to win we play absolutely terrible!

Prof Bananas: Can you believe Silva was sacked once for not wearing the club's official suit? Crazy stuff! Go Tigers

I think it's fair to say that Jose Mourinho was not happy with the penalty decision given against his team, and the one that his side was not given in the second half.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho: "I just want to say congratulations to my players. It was a difficult road to be in the final and we are in the final.

"I don't want to say anything else. It is enough, I am calm, I behaved on the bench, no sending off, no punishment so no more words."

Manchester United captain Michael Carrick: "I wouldn't say we were relieved, we are disappointed in the way we played and losing the game. We wanted to keep our run going and we didn't play well at all. Of course we are delighted to reach the final but it's a strange feeling.

"We expected a tough game, they had to come at us, and we just didn't play well. We don't like losing and we've lost but we are in the final.

"You don't get many chances to win a trophy so we have to grab that chance."

I don't think I've seen Hull actually play badly any time I've seen them this season, but they keep on losing games. Can they stay up?

Hull fans have got to be delighted with the performance tonight. They must think they have just beaten one of the better sides in English football - that must give them hope.

They have some good football players who know what to do with the ball.

Manchester United have got to the final but they did not play well.

Matt Harding: All about the result tonight. Good reality check too for a complacent Utd side. Need to improve, but WEM-BER-LEY!!!!

James Foster: That was an awful display from Man Utd. Second best all around, it's a wonder we're through to the final...

Paul Jewitt: there was a time when Man U fielded weak sides in this cup and teams like Hull took it seriously. How times have changed.

Niasse is extremely direct, very physical, not the easiest on the eye but one of those players who makes things happen when he gets the ball. He was very impressive.

If you're a Hull fan you have to be delighted, particularly with Niasse. They must be thinking they have a wee chance of staying up.

I have to tell you, Hull City deserve all the credit tonight. We couldn't see them winning the game. I didn't think for a minute they would be close to taking the game into extra time. Manchester United deservedly into the final over two games but Hull City can take a lot from tonight.
