I think Hull City need this game like a hole in the head. They have far bigger fish to fry. Fellaini's goal at Old Trafford killed the tie. That said it's a strong side from United and the very opposite from Hull.

United are on a good run. Small Manchester-United-like things are creeping back in, scoring late goals. They will have high hopes of being in the top four.

    Apocalypse now

If you could relive two-and-a-half minutes of any game, which would it be? Some solid suggestions here:

John Coyle: Easy. 27th April 2013. Brentford 0-1 Doncaster Rovers

Danny Charity: 2013, North London Derby - Bale and Lennon score in space of 1 minute. Thought White Hart Lane was going to collapse

Paul: The finale to the 88/89 season...Michael Thomas' last minute goal & flip. Those 150 seconds meant I didn't sleep a wink! Epic.

    It's up for grabs nowwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Hull City midfielder Ryan Mason is making "excellent progress" after fracturing his skull during Sunday's game at Chelsea, his club says.

The England international, 25, clashed heads with Blues defender Gary Cahill 13 minutes into the Premier League match at Stamford Bridge.

He was taken to St Mary's Hospital in London, where he had surgery.

Hull's statement, external said Mason would "continue to be closely monitored by staff" at the hospital.

I can't see Hull getting a result. Manchester United will be too strong for them. The 2-0 deficit is probably going to be too big and they are losing players as well in the transfer window.

The one positive they have is Abel Hernandez is back again and he is scoring, but I don't think the overall quality is there to beat Manchester United.

Hull played pretty well in the first leg at Old Trafford but now have it all to do. They trail by two goals.

Jose Mourinho moved a step closer to a major trophy in his first season as Manchester United manager as goals from Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini secured a first-leg victory.

Juan Mata got the breakthrough just before the hour mark when he tapped in from Henrikh Mkhitaryan's knockdown.

Substitute Marouane Fellaini scored a second late on, heading in from Matteo Darmian's cross to put United in command.

West Ham have joined Burnley in having an offer accepted by Hull for Robert Snodgrass, while Middlesbrough say they have also made a bid.

The offers from West Ham and Burnley are in the region of £10m, though the Hammers' is higher.

Clarets boss Sean Dyche said there was a "difference" between a fee being agreed and "a player joining".

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka says his club are "working on offers with Hull".

"I think they rejected an offer but we are working, " he added.

  17. Saints already throughpublished at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January 2017

Southampton boss Claude Puel has stressed the importance of securing European football next season after his side reached the EFL Cup final.

Saints won at Liverpool and will face Manchester United or Hull, with the winners entering the Europa League.

Puel faced criticism when his side drew with Hapoel Be'er Sheva to exit the Europa League group stage this season.

"It's important to put this experience for next year in European games. It'll be important to qualify," said Puel.

"It will be important for the squad to continue the work, to improve, and know the possibilities to play European games."

    OK. It's cold.

One of those freeze your face nights.

I nipped outside from the warmth of the media room to get a shot of the team buses arriving and in the couple of minutes I had my gloves off, my hands were already freezing.

On the face of it, there is little chance of extra-time at the KCOM but if Hull are to prevail and book a Wembley date with Southampton, I sincerely hope it is by a score big enough to get them through in 90 minutes.

Hull need to prioritise. It's an important competition but staying in the Premier League is more important. Even though Abel Hernandez is in form, I don't think this is a game for him to play. He needs to be fit for the Premier League week in week out.
