    Southampton v Leicester (12:00 GMT)

Southampton manager Claude Puel is expecting this to be a bit of a bruising encounter.

"It's two teams with difficulties in the Premier League, in the same situation," he said. "We want a good result and the points. It's important to have good concentration for this.

"They will want to counter-attack against us. We know this game. It's a physical game also and it's important to analyse them well, have good concentration and the right attitude, like the last three games."

Plenty of pundits are predicting this game to end in a draw and be low on entertainment. Leicester have not won away from home all season and Southampton struggle to score goals. The stats certainly don't lend themselves to the possibility of a classic.

    Prove them wrong, guys.

Claude Puel's rotation policy is not working. Meanwhile, Leicester's form remains completely up and down.

The Foxes still have not won away from home, and do not look anything like the team they were last season. I do not see that changing here.

    Prediction: 1-1

Claudio Ranieri kept banging the drum about needing to get to the 40 point mark and guarantee safety last season, even when they were top of the Premier League.

This season, he actually does need to think seriously about getting to that mark. They have 21 points at the moment and are just five points above the drop zone.

"We're focused on our target of 40pts," said Ranieri. "We've won away games in the Champions League, but not the Premier League so we must concentrate."

Southampton begin life after the departure of their captain Jose Fonte, who signed for West Ham last week. The Saints' partnership in the centre of defence today consists of Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida.

Have to say - and this is nothing against the Hammers - but I am quite surprised by Fonte's move, considering he had been strongly linked with Manchester United.

  11. More changes for 'the new Tinkerman'?published at 11:02 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2017

    Southampton v Leicester (12:00 GMT)

    John Roder
    Match of the Day commentator

It was goalless when these two sides met earlier this season, and another 0-0 draw on Sunday has to be a strong possibility.

Southampton are struggling for goals at St Mary's in the Premier League this season, while Leicester have scored only eight on their travels.

Leicester's away record this season is in stark contrast to their title-winning campaign. A draw this Sunday would be a good result given the fact they come into the weekend in the bottom six.

Claude Puel may very well inherit the "Tinkerman", external nickname from Claudio Ranieri, for the Saints manager has not yet selected an unchanged side this season.

  12. 'Rooney up there with the best of them'published at 10:59 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2017

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick was on BBC Radio 5 live this morning discussing Wayne Rooney following his record-breaking strike.

He said: "There are so many things to admire with Wayne – his sheer footballing ability is the main thing, which has changed over the years in how you play the game, but that is a natural progression. When he burst onto the scene he was so hungry and aggressive and explosive. He has calmed that down but he is quality in and around the box, to find that pass or that finish. But I’d also have to say  his longevity. He has done it all his career - 12-13 years and to do it for so long is an incredible achievement and shows how good he is.

"It is hard to compare players from different eras because they all have different qualities. I have seen more of Wayne than others like Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best. They are all icons and legends, not just for Manchester United but for football in general and Wayne is right up there with the best of them. For him to get the record for club and country is an incredible achievement and something he should be proud of."

Scott J. Butterfield: It's not that good a record. Perhaps Rooney is a legend in a small peerage, but a long way off the real ones. He's obviously done well, but he's about 100 goals off Ian Rush's record.

Alan Proctor: Yet some people will say he's overrated. Greatest English striker of all time

JJ: The record will stand for another 40-50 years. Legend. Statue incoming at Old Trafford

It's not taken long for the first game of the day to come around. Southampton versus Leicester gets under way at 12:00 GMT, which means we should be getting team news in 10 minutes or so.

Don't let the above picture of clear blue skies fool you into thinking it's a lovely day on the south coast. It is a bitterly cold morning.

I'm predicting no fewer than 12 players wearing gloves today.

  18. Rooney 'a true great for club and country'published at 10:45 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2017

    Stoke 1-1 Manchester United

Sir Bobby Charlton says Wayne Rooney is "a true great for club and country" after the striker broke his Manchester United all-time goalscoring record.

Rooney's injury-time equaliser at Stoke on Saturday was his 250th for United, breaking Charlton's 44-year-old record.

"I would be lying to say that I'm not disappointed to have lost the record," Charlton said. "However, I can honestly say that I'm delighted for Wayne. He deserves his place in the history books."

Liverpool have got an excellent record against the top six, but they have been beaten by Bournemouth , Swansea and Burnley - that tells you there is an issue with attitude and application, you cannot just turn up to games and expect to win.
