At last a shot to test a goalkeeper - and it results in the opening goal!

Joe Bryan really deserves this to go down as his own, producing a stunning 25-yard volley which rattles the underside of the crossbar - only for it to clatter into the back of keeper Brian Murphy and cross the line.

You know how managers will often say "I'll take the goal any which way it comes, off someone's backside will do"?

Because if Lee Johnson said that before the game, he's got his wish.

Cardiff have got to get more men forward this half and quicker. They’ve got to take more care of the football, they can’t just rely on set-pieces.

Neil Warnock's side have come out much the better at the start of this second period, Anthony Pilkington having an early shot from close range deflected away from goal. That's a bit more like it.

  4. KICK-OFFpublished at 46 mins

We're back under way in the Severnside derby at Ashton Gate, Bristol City all in red, Cardiff City all in blue, the deadlock yet to be broken.

  5. Can Nolan make himself a hero?published at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 14 January 2017

    Notts County 0-0 Mansfield

Kevin Nolan can make a huge impression in his first game as Notts County boss against Mansfield Town today, their rivals from up the A60.

Nolan, who replaced the outgoing John Sheridan, takes over a Magpies side just above the drop zone.

The former Newcastle and Bolton midfielders' opposite number in the Stags dugout is Steve Evans, which could provide an interesting introduction to management.

The League Two match at Meadow Lane has just kicked off.

... An opportunity they duly snaffled, with Chris Wood's header enough to give the Whites an impressive victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Derby County at Elland Road.

Leeds had already squandered numerous opportunities by the time Wood headed Pablo Hernandez's corner past Scott Carson on the stroke of half-time.

Defender Kyle Bartley was most guilty, bundling wide from inside the six-yard box with the goal at his mercy.

Derby had Bradley Johnson sent off in the closing stages for two bookings.

    Reading 0-1 QPR

    Jamie MackieImage source, Rex Features

Jamie Mackie scored the winner against his old club Reading to give QPR their third consecutive Championship victory on Thursday

In an otherwise drab first half, Mackie was left unmarked at the back post to lash home from Ryan Manning's touch.

The Royals piled forward after the break but struggled to create openings, with Idrissa Sylla having two goalbound shots blocked for the visitors.

Jaap Stam's side almost equalised when Yann Kermorgant headed Garath McCleary's cross against the bar - but their surprise defeat gave Leeds United an opportunity to move up to third...

Bristol City have had a lot more of the ball and have looked more dangerous, I think - but they still need to be careful defending Cardiff's set-plays.

And that's us for the first half.

Bristol City have had the better of the overall play, but it's hard to argue against it being all square at the break.

It's actually been a decent end to this first half and so, from a neutral's perspective, half-time is probably coming at the wrong time.

Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson is getting overly upset about a throw-in that's given against his team - but, given the recent run his team have been on, he'll surely be fairly satisfied the clean sheet is still intact.

The Bluebirds attempt another assault on the Bristol City goal, but home goalkeeper Frank Fielding is fouled and the hosts survive.

Neither team has really grabbed the initiative yet, both seem to be struggling for confidence. They are trying to get it going, but it seems difficult at the moment.

Jens Hegeler, a January signing from Hertha Berlin, has looked very impressive already in his early Bristol City career - and the German is now striding out of defence and into the Cardiff half, before seeing a strike a goal deflected behind for a corner.

Cardiff clear the corner relatively simply.
