Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho speaking to BT Sport: "I am happy because it was a professional job from minute one. We knew Reading that could create difficulties especially if you allow them to settle in the game. It is also good for me to see some of the players that are not starting in many games - they are good physically and I can count on them for the rest of the season.

On Marcos Rojo's injury: "I don't know. I have to wait a bit. A muscle is a muscle and we are a little bit afraid of it. Without Eric Bailly, it is more important."

Jose Mourinho on Wayne Rooney matching Sir Bobby Charlton's club record: "A more special day will arrive. It was great but I want one more goal! He is an amazing guy in the group and we all want him to do that. To have Wayne as the top scorer in a club like this is magnificent for him.

"We play well, but not better than in some matches in which we did not win. Everything is built on some not so good result. It was a very important for the creation of empathy and a strong group."

  5. "We are all humans"published at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2017

    Man Utd 4-0 Reading

Reading manager Jaap Stam: "It is certainly a lesson for my team. You have got to start aggressively against a team like this, otherwise they will make you pay. We started better in the second half, possession-wise, but we do not create many chances. But credit to the opposition they have a lot of quality, skill and speed up front. You learn something from the movement of their players.

On why they started so slowly: "It could be a little bit of stagefright. But we are all humans, we all have feelings, you cannot programme them like computers."

I did an Ali Al Habsi once. Playing in defence for Norwich I accidentally knocked the ball into the path of the opposition's striker who pounced on it and scored. So I know exactly how that feels.

  7. Al-Habsi's 'comical' goalkeeping errorpublished at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2017

Reading goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi makes a horrible mistake to gift Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford a second goal during the Red Devils' 4-0 FA Cup third-round win at Old Trafford.

I am about to publish the Ali Al Habsi howler again. Please watch it. I know it's cruel but it has that laugh-out-loud factor. Sorry Reading fans.

    So, are we ready?

  9. 'Some good stuff'published at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2017

    Man Utd 4-0 Reading

More from Wayne Rooney on BT Sport: "We played some good stuff and scored some good goals. Reading are a good team, they try and play in the right way which is refreshing to see, we are happy with the win and it is a good day for the club."

    Man Utd 4-0 Reading

Jose Mourinho had little to worry about today and life seems swell for him at the moment.

This run of eight wins on the spin is his best since 2006 when he reached the same mark with Chelsea.

  11. "A proud moment"published at 14:32 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2017

    Man Utd 4-0 Reading

    Manchester United

Wayne Rooney speaking to BT Sport: "It is a proud moment. To do it at such a massive club like Manchester United, I am hugely honoured and it is really proud moment for me. It was not something I could have imagined. You don't think that far ahead, but I have been at this club a long time, it is a huge part of my life and it is an honour to be up there alongside Sir Bobby.

"You want to do records in front of your home fans and we have got two home games coming up and hopefully I can get the next one in one of those."

  12. 'My style is better'published at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2017

With all the Wayne Rooney headlines before half time we didn't really give this moment the attention it deserved before the break. A clash of two of English football's hair heavyweights.

I don't recall seeing a team have 27 shots off 45% possession before.

Perhaps that shows us just how vulnerable Reading were defensively. Time and again they were hurt by through balls.

Jose Mourinho will be absolutely delighted with his side's performance. There were no real failures in the United team today, and up front Wayne Rooney was very, very lively, especially in the first half.

As the game wore on, Marcus Rashford showed that he is the future. His pace is extraordinary and he gets in great positions. He scored two today and could easily have four or five. He is very special.

The United fans expect some sort of silverware this season.

  16. FULL-TIMEpublished at 14:20 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2017

    Man Utd 4-0 Reading

Sir Bobby Charlton stands from his seat and looks on as the whistle is blown on a game which saw his sole position as Manchester United's club-record scorer taken.

He now shares it with Wayne Rooney - the pair on 249 goals.

As Rooney walks from the pitch and nears the tunnel he waves to someone he knows with a smile. Just one more needed for outright history.

Very much his day. Reading offered spirit but little resistance and their hopes of being in round four faded fast.

There have been ups and downs for Wayne Rooney is his career, and you have to say there seems to have been a steady decline over the last two or three seasons.

But if you're his manager you'll be heartened by his excellent performance today.
