Manchester United have been sparkling right from the start, and Wayne Rooney is the headline maker.

Reading have got themselves back into it a little bit but need to create more chances and, at the moment, it's a big mountain to climb.

What will Jaap Stam have to say to his players? They have been under the pump for large spells, facing 18 shots in a half is not something they will do too often.

There has just not been anywhere near enough bit in midfield where United have been allowed to play and pick passes at will.

    Man Utd 2-0 Reading

A half in which Manchester United seized and maintained dominance but the cameras and headlines will focus on one man. Will he bag goal 250 after the break?

    Man Utd 2-0 Reading

Reading resemble that Sunday League team who want to play a bit and indeed can play but have no one who wants to defend or put a foot in. It's like a team of Faustino Asprillas out there.

Marcus Rashford seizes on a deflection to collect the ball near the dead-ball line and has time to pick his head up. A low near-post cross has Anthony Martial interested but Chris Gunter produces a fine last-ditch tackle. Gunter had to act or that was a third.

    Two added minutes.

This time Anthony Martial attacks the left flank at pace, again there's little stopping him and his pass along the edge of the area is fired over by Juan Mata.

  8. Postpublished at 42 mins

    Man Utd 2-0 Reading

Manchester United are attacking with a slickness against this weak Reading midfield and Ashley Young almost bags an assist on his 150th club outing.

He cuts the ball back from the right, Juan Mata shapes to shoot but doesn't creating space to drive low into the body of George Evans. That is a fine block six yards out.

  9. 'Reading really have established themselves'published at 13:10 Greenwich Mean Time 7 January 2017

    Manchester United 2-0 Reading

There was a period of about 10 minutes of complete shock among the Reading fans, wondering if their team could even survive the United onslaught.

But since then the Royals really have established themselves in this game. It's just such a shame they had such a rocky start.

    Man Utd 2-0 Reading

If you are just joining us Wayne Rooney has levelled Sir Bobby Charlton's Manchester United scoring record of 249 goals. A moment of club history arrived right at the start of a half which has been pretty routine for Jose Mourinho's side.

At one point it looked like they may score 249 today. Reading have been peeled open like a fresh orange time and again by a United side boasting nine changes from their win at West Ham.

    Man Utd 2-0 Reading

We have a boxing head-to-head in the middle of the pitch between Reading's Danny Williams and Marouane Fellaini. One man covered in tattoos, the other covered in hair.

It's kicked off over a late Fellaini challenge. In truth there's little in it and Williams needs to relax a little.

  12. Postpublished at 36 mins

    Man Utd 2-0 Reading

Juan Mata eyes a free-kick from 25 yards out and central but the wall does its job. As you can see, Reading have got back into it a little in terms of possession but their goal is leading a charmed life.

  13. GREAT SAVE!published at 34 mins

    Man Utd 2-0 Reading

Marcus Rashford should have at least two by now as he continues to find joy behind this almost non-existent defence.

Michael Carrick's pass finds Wayne Rooney 40 yards out and his clever ball around the corner sends Rashford one on one. Out rushes Ali Al-Habsi to block the shot. Good goalkeeping, good United play, terrible defending again.

Paul Charles: If Reading aren't careful this game's going to be over before half-time, just like Man City v West Ham.

Vaishach: Say all you want, but Rooney is a great player. Never fails to silence the critics. Put him down he will raise back up.

Khurshid Patel: That time when Friday night spent waiting to watch United at 5.30am in Canada. Rooney recognises this and finally scores that record goal.

Jaap Stam is berating his troops. There's fingers being pointed and steam coming from his mouth. Again they try to build play neatly and Garath McCleary takes Daley Blind on down the right only for his cut-back to be swiped clear by Juan Mata.

    Man Utd 2-0 Reading

Reading seem to have a few ideas when in the Manchester United half but none when it comes to the defensive side of the game.

George Evans plays a fine ball from midfield to Liam Kelly on the right. He pulls the ball down and drills a shot at goal but it's easily held by Sergio Romero.

  18. What a misspublished at 26 mins

    Man Utd 2-0 Reading

Marcus Rashford wants the ground to open up and swallow him.

He's put clear by Chris Smalling and rounds the keeper but cannot turn the ball home with his right foot, it just finds the side netting. The angle was acute but most strikers would have found the answer to such a conundrum and he will be disappointed.

Reading doing pretty much everything wrong. No pressure on Smalling and Rashford allowed to find a gap in the defence.

A fantastic opportunity for Reading and Liam Moore. He tries to put his leg out and had he made any contact at all it would have taken a brilliant save from the goalkeeper as Moore was only about five yards out.

  20. CLOSE!published at 25 mins

    Man Utd 2-0 Reading

Yann Kermorgant picks the ball up on the Reading right and will cross... blocked... corner.

In comes the delivery, it's to the edge of the area and Joey van den Berg will volley. The ball skids into the six-yard box and Liam Moore misses his kick. What a chance. He only had to nudge the ball home, instead it trickles wide.
