Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking about goalscorer Sergio Aguero on Sky Sports: "I am happy and was very pleased with display of Sergio. When a huge player is left out people ask, "Why? Why? Why?".

"In the future I want to involve both Gabriel Jesus and Sergio when they’re fit. Sergio helped us a lot in our game and in the build up. It was brilliant."

The leaders have been able to sit back and watch their rivals in action all weekend, and now Chelsea can go back 10 points clear at the top with a win on their first visit to London Stadium on Monday night.

Alternatively, West Ham could beat the leaders for only the third time in 22 Premier League games to motor into the top half.

Sunderland manager David Moyes speaking to BBC Sport:  "I don't think you can fault the players for any of that. We lacked quality at times though. They did all they could to try to get something out of the game."

On the team:  "When you're in it every day you see the levels go up. We've got games coming up - we don't have to show it, we have to do it.

"We tried to make chances. The one that hits the post and comes out maybe that'll hit the inside of the post and go in next time.

"I hope our players understand the position that we're in, but we're not panicking."

"We are so happy. We played good. We expected aggression and intensity. It was a very good first goal. It was important to go into half-time 1-0 up. If they were winning with the amazing atmosphere it would have been difficult.

"Leroy Sane is every day getting better. He has gaps to improve but he's only 21. He's an intelligent guy and a very nice guy. We are here to help him become what he can be.

"We were passing the ball between ourselves in the last 25 minutes. I don't like to defend a result and be near our box. It is OK if you're 3-0 or 4-0 up but not 2-0."

'They gave everything' says David Moyes, it's a familiar tale from the Sunderland boss.

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure:  "We are very happy with the display. Sunderland made us suffer in the first half. Against the teams that are fighting it's difficult.

"In the first half they had more corner kicks than us. With the quality players we have we started to move the ball about. It was quite close and we got lucky today."

Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford:  "I think if we score that goal when Jerman Defoe hits the post it would have been a different game. As a unit we kept going and kept working hard as a team after they scored that second goal.

"We have to keep going and grinding out results. We're a strong unit on and off the pitch - we just have to keep plugging and getting the results."

Manchester City midfielder David Silva: "We have to believe. We know the last two or three months are the most important part of season. We’re in a good moment." 

Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford felt that the opening goal just before half time changed the game.

The 22-year-old will go far, he made five saves this afternoon. 

James Stringer: I think that's it as far as Sunderland are concerned. Though they always surprise, I don't think they have it this year!   

Daniel Heel: Sunderland couldn't score against a team where 3 of the back 4 are over 30, and the other is John Stones. Toothless?   

The rest of March remains a full-on assault for Manchester City.

They have their game in hand against Stoke at home on Wednesday before an FA Cup quarter-final at Middlesbrough and the second leg of their blockbusting Champions League tie against Monaco.

Then a game which could be crucial for Champions League qualification - they face Liverpool on 19 March.

Pep is on the pitch now coaching John Stones. He will look through the entirety of the team and believe he is getting his message through. He will be absolutely delighted with what he has seen. Other than defending corners or free-kicks, which were awful, there were no weaknesses.

40,000+ fans have emptied the Stadium of Light before Manchester City's players have left the pitch. Impressive.

Sunderland play Burnley, Watford and Leicester in their next three games. They need to win them.

Viv: Good game from City, could/should have scored more. Sunderland just don't have enough quality to play better.  

Agubata Odinaka: I think in the heads of the Sunderland players, they have already been relegated. It's all a formality now.

Sunderland worked really hard in the first half but in the simplest terms Manchester City are a class apart. They played well today but they could have played incredibly if they wanted to.

Pep Guardiola must find it hard to enjoy a win. His side had 67% possession and won 2-0 to go up to third, but he's on the pitch giving David Silva extensive feedback. He then takes Willy Caballero to one side for a one-to-one. Full marks from me for making the City playesr go to applaud the travelling support though. 

Sergio Aguero ends the game on his knees after almost scoring a third right at the end. He took a whack but is OK - his opener helps City to another good win.
