Over on ITV, Ryan Giggs is confident that Germany should have had a penalty when Gary Cahill blocked a cross with his arm. He had his hands behind his back and his arms down by his side - I'm not sure he could do much more.

That is a BIG call from, perhaps correctly named, The Optimist.

Mind you I can't think of too many alternatives off the top of my head. Does Matt Le Tissier count as after Gazza?

Russell Seymour: England always play a blinder when there's nothing at stake

The Optimist: Adam Lallana is the most technically gifted player England have since Paul Gascoigne.

Robin Smit: Maybe England need to go into tournaments with a "Friendly" mentality because they play so much better in these games

That Dele Alli chance - a poor finish but it was actually better goalkeeping from Marc-Andre ter Stegen than I gave him credit for originally.

Not a thrilling first half but England much the better side. Gareth Southgate will be satisfied while Germany's display has been very half-hearted. Plenty to please England's manager - so what changes will he make after the break?

England manager Gareth Southgate managed to take some time out from his preparations for this week's internationals to visit the  Burton Albion Community Trust, external  and find out about grassroots football schemes.

Germany were as poor in that first half as you will ever see but lots of that was down to England, who put in an impressive performance. They were great out of possession, and forced loads of mistakes from the hosts.

The system gets a thumbs-up from me. It makes the most of England's best players, which is surely the point.

Christopher David: I can't work out whether England look decent or Germany look poor

Josh: England have been enjoyable to watch and have played some nice stuff. The only downside has been a little lack of quality in attacking setups through the midfield - a couple of breaks have been wasted opportunities because of Livermore, Dier and Walker missing passes or not taking on the final pass. But it has been otherwise promising.

Duncan: Are you sure England are not in white tonight? Very England-esque passing from the Germans so far!

He should score. I'm not sure what happened in the Germany defence, it was a bit of a shambles.

Dele Alli doesn't do enough. It's a golden opportunity. He hit the goalkeeper more than making him make a great save.

You've got to be more clinical. England have had two one-on-ones and missed them both.

  14. GREAT SAVE!published at 41 mins

    Germany 0-0 England

England should be ahead! A great chance, you don't get better chances than that at this level. Again, it's really good play from England though as they harry the ball away from Germany 35 yards from their own goal. I think it was Adam Lallana who gets a toe in, England are suddenly two-on-two and Jamie Vardy is able to tee up Dele Alli bursting into the area.

He has a load of time, too much probably, and goes for pure power, drilling into the body of Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Needed the placement.

Was it a foul? Possibly. Maybe Rudiger was a touch late as Dele Alli slipped it past him, felt the contact. I don't have an issue with that.

Eric Dier tried to dip it over the wall, didn't get enough bend, didn't get enough angle.

England have had the best chances, without a shadow of a doubt. Germany have dominated possession, but England could have scored two or three.

Eric Dier, who has scored every free-kick he's ever taken in Marseille, clips this one over the bar.

Dele Alli is really growing into the game, twice beating a defender and winning a foul just outside the box. The second one is given in 'Eric Dier' range, as I'm calling it.

Kris Jefferson: Is this the game that proves England don't need big name players (I.e Wilshere/Rooney). Look like a proper team without them

Jake Garner: Actually quite like the new England kit!

Harrison Short: I laughed when I saw the team sheet this afternoon, but really impressive performance so far! Hope we can keep it going

Leroy Sane breezes past Michael Keane and tees up Lukas Podolski, who drills a shot way over the bar. He was always going to hit that first time.

Gary Cahill blocks a cross and it does hit his arm - pinned to his side. Not much in the way of an appeal as Joe Hart then pulls off a Cruyff turn inside his goalmouth to get away from Timo Werner.

Dele Alli with a delightful piece of skill to cut between Jonas Hector and Leroy Sane but it eventually comes to nothing.

England have had a promising half. Gareth Southgate must be pleased.
