Manchester United's hat-trick scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic:"We created good chances. It was important to get a good win at home and we bring it with us in the second leg. It was a good game but I think we can do better.

"Every time I've played against Saint-Etienne, with hard work there has been a couple of goals. I've scored a couple of goals tonight and hopefully I can do the same next week.

"We're winning but in a short time everything can change. It's important to keep getting the wins we need. Everything can change but we're happy at the moment.

"This is the decisive moment for the season. We are still in all four competitions. The fifth we already won [the Community Shield]."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not the only player celebrating a hat-trick right now. Edin Dzeko has hit a treble too in an emphatic 4-0 win for Roma at Villarreal.

It's been a good night for the 30-something strikers; 33-year-old Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has scored his 50th goal in Uefa club competitions to complete a 3-0 win for Schalke at PAOK.

Earlier, 36-year-old Aritz Aduriz scored for Athletic Bilbao, but they're looking a bit shaky going into their second leg. Giannis Gianniotas has driven a second away goal for Apoel, meaning that Athletic will take a slender 3-2 lead to Cyprus.

Elsewhere, Canada international Atiba Hutchinson has scored a stoppage-time goal for Besiktas, 3-1 winners at Hapoel Be'er Sheva tonight.

Two other results: Anderlecht have beaten Zenit St-Petersburg 2-0, and Legia Warsaw have drawn 0-0 at home to an Ajax side who finished with 10 men after Kenny Tete was sent off.

Job very much done by Manchester United. Saint-Etienne really pushed them in the first half but after the break the traffic was pretty much one way.

    It's a 17th career hat-trick for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Harrison Short: Probably the least impressive hat-trick ever scored.

Aidan Mifsud: What a cheat Ibra. Or at least terrible sportsmanship. It's because of players like him that non-fans make fun of football.

James Watson: Horrendous diving display from Zlatan tonight.. Shameful professionalism

No nonsense, head down and buried into the corner. It's a hat-trick for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and it's probably tie over. Saint-Etienne were so close to making it 1-1, and excellent in the firs half, but United have had their foot on the pedal in the second half.

    Europa League latest

Schalke look very well placed to secure a place in the Europa League last 16 - Max Meyer has powered in a downward header from Benedikt Howedes' cross to give them a 2-0 lead at PAOK.

Still no goals in Poland, but Ajax are down to 10 men away to Legia Warsaw. Right-back Kenny Tete has picked up two quick yellow cards, the second for a shirt tug on an opponent.
