Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho: "The boys are fit, in good condition and with a final to play very soon. We focus on these knockout matches.

"We try to play with a best possible team with a good bench and good solutions.

"It is easy, fun for Paul Pogba to play his brother. It is a good test for their professionalism. They don't have many chances to play against each other, it is enjoyable, something to remember."

Vaishach: Good result should be anything with three or more goals without conceding an away goal!

Dave Gorton: To the anonymous texter at 19:33; what did the class of 92 achieve at international level? What's homegrown got to do with it?

Barney Slavin: Mourinho is a victim of his own success. A reputation for winning means no place for sentiment or inconsistent youth.

Saint-Etienne have the second best defence in the French league so expect them to try and frustrate United and hit them on the break.

Anonymous: Look at that Utd line up! I'm my opinion Mourinho is bad for English football. Here is a man earning millions through our national game and yet he has a track record of blatantly disregarding homegrown players in favour of players who are no better. Only Smalling involved tonight. He Did the same at Chelsea. Oh for Sir Alex and the Class of 92.

St Etienne are fifth in Ligue 1, sandwiched by Marseille and Lyon.

There are a smattering of vaguely familiar names to Premier League fans in the squad.

Remember Kevin Theophile-Catherine from his Cardiff days? Sure you do.

How about Newcastle signing Henri Saivet? He's there on loan, along with one of the very many Aston Villa misfits of recent times, Jordan Veretout.

Like Hot Chocolate, or Brotherhood of Man, St Etienne were a big deal for a brief period in the late 70s. They were beaten in the final of the European Cup by Bayern Munich in 1976 and nearly knocked Liverpool out a year later.

But what of the current crop?

Luke Shaw was a reported target for Jose Mourinho when he was Chelsea manager before his £27m move to Manchester United two-and-a-half years ago, but now finds himself not in the squad for the fourth successive game.

The 21-year-old - who was criticised by his manager earlier in the season for mistakes in the defeat at Watford - has only played once since the end of November, in the 4-0 win over Wigan in the FA Cup, although he was out injured in December.

Clearly after a long injury absence last season he needs games to regain his best form, and if he is again overlooked when United go to Blackburn in that competition on Sunday, you do wonder if he will have to start considering if his future lies away from Old Trafford.

The Pogbas' mother, Yeo, will be at both legs of this tie, enjoying the "one-off" occasion to the maximum.

Jose Mourinho said: "I think mother Pogba is in trouble, which is normal.

"It is not difficult for the lady to choose, it is impossible. I know from Paul that his mum wants a draw.

"But next week, one son will be happy and another will be sad. But only for their mum is it a problem.

"For them, I think they will enjoy playing against each other. Paul is excited. It is a good thing."

"A rivalry renewed" says tonight's matchday programme at Old Trafford, where Manchester United face Saint-Etienne for the first time at the Theatre of Dreams.

The reason? Their only previous meeting over two legs in 1977 in the Cup Winners' Cup saw United disqualified after crowd trouble marred the first leg.

Uefa eventually relented and reinstated United, but ordered them to play the second leg 200 miles from Old Trafford. They opted for Plymouth's Home Park, and won 3-1 on aggregate over the two games.

Saint-Etienne captain Loic Perrin says his side have nothing to lose at Old Trafford.

"Initially we said 'damn, that's not the best draw'. But we're playing in Europe to take part in exactly this type of match," he said.

"They're a top European club who, not so long ago, were winning the Champions League."

Perrin and his team-mates are used to facing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored 14 goals against them during his spell at Paris St-Germain.

"He's the type of player you dream about facing. It's always amazing for us defenders to test ourselves against such world-class players," added Perrin.

"That's what we all want, always, but at Manchester he's not the only player of that calibre."

So Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has stuck to his word and named the same back four that started against Watford, but has changed his goalkeeper, with Sergio Romero replacing David de Gea with four games to come in the next 10 days.

Marouane Fellaini adds a bit more steel in midfield with Henrikh Mkhitaryan omitted, but Saint-Etienne won't be pleased so see Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front - the Swedish striker scored 14 goals in 13 games against them during his time with Paris St-Germain.
