Thanks for joining us on what has proved to be a pretty breathless day of action in the English Football League.

There were important results at both ends of the Championship table, while Fleetwood Town made it 18 games unbeaten in League One to boost their promotion hopes.

Newcastle look to be heading back to the Premier League, as they are now 11 points ahead of third-paced Huddersfield after beating the Terriers 3-1.

And Dwight Gayle got his 21st of the season on his return from injury. He's now one goal behind the Championship's top scorer Chris Wood.

We'll do it all again with another live text offering on Tuesday, when the Magpies go to Reading in a full programme in the second tier.

    Until then, goodbye.

  2. Recap: Blackburn out of drop zonepublished at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2017

    FT: Blackburn 1-0 Wigan

Marvin Emnes' goal gave Blackburn a priceless win over Wigan in the Championship relegation battle.

The Dutchman broke the deadlock from the edge of the area in the second half, scoring his first goal in five months.

Rovers made it three games unbeaten since Tony Mowbray took charge to go two points clear of the relegation zone.

Wigan remain in 23rd place, four points from safety.

  3. Reaction: 'We lack respect for our team-mates'published at 19:47 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2017

    FT: Sheffield Wednesday 5-1 Norwich

Norwich suffered a 5-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday to fall nine points adrift of the play-off places.

Norwich striker Cameron Jerome told BBC Radio Norfolk:

"Ultimately we've been embarrassing, and a lack of everything on the pitch has let us down and it's looking like an uphill task now to make the play-offs.

"We'll keep fighting, we'll keep going to the end. We owe it to ourselves, we owe it the fans, we owe it to the club.

    Cameron JeromeImage source, Rex Features

"We've not got enough about us as a squad to roll our sleeves up unfortunately and we've been found out on more than one occasion, that's why our away record's so poor.

"You've got to be honest with yourself and as players we're not honest with ourselves. I think we lack respect for our team-mates, we're not fighting for each other.

"We lack respect for the coaching staff, all the things they do for us we don't follow our instructions or orders it's like everyone plays for themselves.

"The fans are coming in their droves away from home to support the team, and ultimately we've come up short again."

  4. Recap: Owls hammer Norwichpublished at 19:44 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2017

    FT: Sheffield Wednesday 5-1 Norwich

Sheffield Wednesday consolidated their place in the play-offs with a thumping win over Norwich.

Ross Wallace gave the Owls an early lead with a finish into an empty net from 40 yards after John Ruddy failed to get distance on a clearance.

Jordan Rhodes made it 2-0 with a header from Fernando Forestieri's cross before Cameron Jerome pulled one back only for Morgan Fox to make it 3-1 at the break.

Rhodes headed his second before Forestieri scored a fine free-kick, as Wednesday recovered from successive league defeats.

  5. Recap: Brighton beaten at Forestpublished at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2017

    FT: Nottm Forest 3-0 Brighton

Nottingham Forest scored two late goals to seal victory as Brighton missed the chance to go top of the Championship table.

The Seagulls went behind to Zach Clough's strike on the hour mark before Ben Osborn netted and Clough bagged a second from the spot penalty.

Albion suffered back-to-back league defeats for the first time September, and are now five points behind league leaders Newcastle.

  6. 'The game plan was good'published at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2017

    FT: Huddersfield 1-3 Newcastle

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez told Sky Sports:

"We knew we were playing against a team comfortable in possession, so we decided to defend and try and counter-attack.

"I won't say we were comfortable, because they were passing the ball well, but the game-plan was good. They had to shoot from distance.

"We defended well and showed that, when we could, we could attack well.

"It was about discipline and work-rate. We were well organised and needed to work hard and we did it."

  8. Magpies continue away runpublished at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2017

    FT: Huddersfield 1-3 Newcastle

Newcastle really showed their resilience in the second half there, dealing with pretty much everything that was thrown at them by Huddersfield.

The penalty, for Jonjo Shelvey's challenge on Elias Kachunga, was their only blot in the second half.

Victory means the Magpies continue their astounding away record.

That's now 13 wins and two draws from 18 games on the road this season.

And it's back-to-back wins against their promotion rivals. First at Brighton in midweek, now Huddersfield this evening.

Rafael Benitez's side go to fifth-placed Reading on Tuesday. You wouldn't bet against them making it a hat-trick of victories.

  9. 'We were resolute'published at 19:29 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2017

    FT: Huddersfield 1-3 Newcastle

Newcastle United midfielder Matt Ritchie told Sky Sports:

"We spoke in the week about being hard to beat.

"We were solid and resolute in the second half. It is brilliant to be involved in the title race as it is what we wanted at the start of the season.

"We are three points closer but we need to carry on doing what we are doing."

  10. Postpublished at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2017

    FT: Huddersfield 1-3 Newcastle

    A massive win for Newcastle.

They are now five points clear at the top of the Championship.

And, crucially, 11 points clear of third-placed Huddersfield.

It's harsh on the Terriers, who played brilliantly and dominated the game.

    Huddersfield 1-3 Newcastle

Newcastle fans enjoyed that one and are in fine voice.

It's been a difficult second half for the Magpies fans, with their side on the back foot for most of it.

Dwight Gayle scoresImage source, Rex Features

Newcastle seal the points and Dwight Gayle won't have an easier goal all season!

Huddersfield keeper Joel Coleman came up for that corner, and eventually got punished for it.

After heading back, he misjudges a punt upfield and gets it all wrong.

Gayle latches on to the loose ball and taps into an empty net.

That's his 21st of the season.

    Huddersfield 1-2 Newcastle

Rajiv van La Parra picks up the ball on the left, drops the shoulder and strikes.

Newcastle keeper Karl Darlow parries it away.

Another strike comes in from Aaron Mooy and goes behind for a corner.

    Huddersfield 1-2 Newcastle

It's going to be a testy few minutes for Newcastle now.

Especially with big striker Collin Quaner thrown on by Huddersfield. There could be a fair few balls into the box before the final whistle goes.

The Terriers aren't going direct - yet.

  17. Postpublished at 87 mins

    Huddersfield 1-2 Newcastle

In one of my favourite lesser-spotted things in football, the ball hits the corner flag and remains in play!

But a free-kick is given, as Aaron Mooy had fouled Dwight Gayle as the Newcastle striker tried to shield the ball out of play.

  18. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 86 mins

    Huddersfield 1-2 Newcastle

Huddersfield force a corner and make their final change before taking it.

Big striker Collin Quaner comes on for defender Chris Lowe.

  19. Reaction: 'Nothing wrong with our spirit'published at 19:15 Greenwich Mean Time 4 March 2017

    Bristol City 0-0 Burton

    Lloyd DyerImage source, Rex Features

Bristol City missed a penalty and had a goal disallowed, while Lloyd Dyer missed from two yards for Burton in a goalless draw at Ashton Gate, a result which leave the Brewers three points above the bottom three.

    Burton head coach Nigel Clough:

"Lloyd will have nightmares about that one. When the ball rolled across goal and past a post I could barely believe it.

"We may not be as good as some of the other teams, but there is nothing wrong with our spirit.

"The players put bodies on the line, which is the least we must do if we are to compete in the Championship.

    Huddersfield 1-2 Newcastle

Huddersfield forward Elias Kachunga bursts into the box.

Jonjo Shelvey is shepherding him but daren't touch him at the cost of another penalty.

Kachunga runs out of space and blasts into the sidenetting.
