Ooofff! The best chance of the match and it falls to Christian Benteke. A dance through at least two Liverpool challenges, a shot from edge of the box that is just to the left of Simon Mignolet's post. A warning sign for Liverpool, who find playing against sides in the bottom half trickier than solving the Riemann hypothesis.

David Ljunggren: A rip-roaring snorter of a game this is not. Anfield sounds like a public library on a quiet afternoon.

I'll be honest, this one isn't quite grabbing the imagination yet. Sam Allardyce talks about the importance of "respecting the point". At the minute, he's worshiping at the altar of the clean sheet. If Palace came to silence the crowd, job done.

Palace are sitting in, not chasing the game. They are nice and compact. Palace are going to be happy to do that and they'll break at pace, be direct at times to Benteke. 

You just feel the first goal is going to be so important in this game. 

When Palace do get the ball, Liverpool regroup quickly, defending the width of the penalty area and crowding the ball. All a touch friendly, a little end-of-season. You wouldn't know that both teams have plenty to play for.

Curiously subdued inside Anfield. Supporters waiting to be entertained rather than participating. Most of the action is in the Palace half. Christian Benteke has to make do with chasing shadows. 

Palace have shown their hand. They are happy for Liverpool to have the ball anywhere near the half-way line, lining up with banks of four. Any time the Palace backline have the ball, they are pressed by men in Red, harrying and hassling. 

Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "They are very strong, tactically, technically and with game knowledge. We huffed and puffed and stuck at it. They scored two poor goals from our point of view, we have to make a foul on the first one.

"We stuck at it. I am pleased with the mentality of the second half. They killed the game. They are a top side. That is the reality of playing some of the top sides. You can't always get above where you are.

"Until the moment it is all done we will keep fighting and see what we can get. Who knows what [how many points] we will need?"

With Palace in that yellow and Liverpool in their usual red it's like watching a liquid rhubarb and custard sweet swarm over the Anfield turf. The hosts are already causing problems with a cross from the left that bounces around in the box.

Palace, in yellow, get us going. They are attacking The Kop, away to our right as we look on.

Unfathomably, the floodlights are on at Anfield. Must have money to burn. You'll Never Walk Alone is as spine-tingling as ever.

Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho: "I'm very happy. It’s not easy to win here and it’s even harder to be in control and we were in control for 90 minutes. We understood the way they play and we played against their strengths. I think it was a great result that we deserved.

"We wanted Anthony Martial to get behind as he’s faster, and he did well. But I can’t choose an individual performance as they all did well. Paul Pogba and Eric Bailley get a mention after two hours of football at against Anderlecht. 

"Everyone is very sad [about Ibrahimovic and Rojo injuries]. We were thinking about them. They have to be strong. Unfortunately they wont be the first or last players to get an important injury.

"Surgery is waiting for them but don’t want to say too much as it’s their privacy."

Former Liverpool man Christian Benteke is greeting his former team-mates with hugs and handshakes. Wilfried Zaha is having a good chuckle with Nathaniel Clyne. Jurgen Klopp looks grumpy.

No time to draw breath, as eyes are now on Anfield. Sunshine on Merseyside, players in the tunnel, Liverpool sporting rather smart red tracksuit tops.
