    FT: Scotland 1-0 Slovenia

It was widely billed as Gordon Strachan's last stand and the Scotland manager is still standing.

A good night for Scotland. It's been a while since we said that, so let's enjoy it.

Thanks for your company and your contributions.

  2. Scotland 'went to another level'published at 22:30 British Summer Time 26 March 2017

    FT: Scotland 1-0 Slovenia

More from Gordon Strachan, who has been speaking at his post-match media conference.

"The players did everything they were asked to tonight. They pushed themselves to another level there. I was calm enough, thinking 'what will be, will be'. I was enjoying their performance - technically, fitness wise and their mental strength.

"The points were the most important thing and the performance helps as well. They have a feeling they can compete against any international team now.  It was a proud performance from us all."

    Best Scotland debut?

High praise for Stuart Armstrong. The Celtic midfielder was full of energy and smart passing and has surely nailed down his place.

The defence wasn't put under too much pressure but a clean sheet is always welcome and Charlie Mulgrew can be pleased with his return to the side.

  4. Martin 'is in great company' - Strachanpublished at 22:19 British Summer Time 26 March 2017

    FT: Scotland 1-0 Slovenia

Scotland boss Gordon Strachan understandably looks a happy, and relieved, man.

"I am very proud, I am delighted for all the players," he tells Sky Sports. "I thought they were magnificent, considering the pressure they were under. They should be really proud of themselves.

"Chris Martin gets a good reception from the players and the staff. That is why we pick him. He is in great company. Kenny Dalglish was booed, so was Gary McAlister, so was Alan Hansen. He must be some player.

"We have got ourselves back in contention and we look forward to the next game now. We can take a lot of things from tonight. These players played extremely well and I think Stuart Armstrong's could be the best Scottish debut I have ever seen."

  6. 'We got what we deserved'published at 22:11 British Summer Time 26 March 2017

    FT: Scotland 1-0 Slovenia

Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong, who impressed on his Scotland debut, told Sky: "It was a good win. We started really well and created a lot of chances, and maybe should have taken one or two of them. But Chris [Martin] comes up with a bit of magic at the end and we get what we deserve.

"I just tried to carry on what I have been doing with Celtic. This puts us in a good position now.  It was a must-win game, we have done that and it is on to the next one [against England at Hampden on 10 June]. We have to approach every game with optimism, believing we can get three points."

I thought Scott Brown did well. Stuart Armstrong was outstanding. Andy Robertson was terrific. This goes back to the point I made earlier - these Scotland players are better than their performances. There was proper substance tonight. I still think it's too late (to qualify), they've left themselves far too much to do.

  8. I just thought 'let it go' - Martinpublished at 22:06 British Summer Time 26 March 2017

    FT: Scotland 1-0 Slovenia

Hero-of-the-hour Chris Martin has been speaking to Sky Sports about his winning goal.

"Stuart [Armstrong] found me in a little bit of space, I had a nice touch and I just thought 'let it go'.  I was delighted to see it go into the corner. The manager sent me on thinking I might be able to get a goal and I am delighted to repay his faith in me. Hopefully it sends the fans home happy."

Here's how the table looks now.

    A three-way fight for second?

I don't want to be a downer but remember that it's eight of the nine runners-up who progress to the play-offs and this looks like it could be a real cutthroat section.

If Chris Martin was unpopular before he will be even more so now with most of Scotland's fans. That goal now inflicts Gordon Strachan on us for even longer. This game changes nothing.

    Fergie, Aberdeen

Thought Stuart Armstrong was excellent tonight and his play to get Chris Martin the goal was the difference between sides.

    Owen

How Scott Brown is captain and has played the full game, I'll never know. Awful, awful player.

    Vic, Glasgow

Embarrassing from the Scotland fans booing Chris Martin coming on as a sub. Delighted that he got the winning goal.

We've got some time to wait for the next game; the small matter of England visiting Hampden on 10 June.

It's going to mean something after tonight's win but Scotland can't afford to lose any more ground in this section.

If they can take three points from the England game then we do have a chance of finishing second. We did perform well, not as well in the second half but we couldn't expect it to be as good as the first half. One thing you can say about Chris Martin is he can sniff a chance, even if he didn't hit it very well, the goalkeeper should have done better

Jim Douglas: "If we could find a centre half and a striker, this might actually be quite a decent team."

Stuart Gunn : "Best Scotland team in a while. First half performance was good but second half was flat. Deserved win in the end."

Sneaks: "Went flat second half. Wrong substitutions all be it Martin scored."

Stuart Randall: "Tierney and Armstrong superb. The former strolling it and new position. Slovenia rotten though."
