It's asking a lot of a young player [Kieran Tierney] to switch from his natural side. It's no surprise that Stuart Armstrong gets his chance tonight

So, what do we know about tonight's opponents?

Slovenia are unbeaten in Group F and sit second behind England, four points ahead of Scotland.

Ranked 58 in the world (nine places above Scotland), they missed out on Euro 2016 after a play-off defeat to Ukraine. The last major tournament they reached was the 2010 World Cup.

Head coach Srecko Katanec returned for a second spell in January 2013, having steered them to a first European Championship and World Cup in 2000 and 2002.

Or should that be oh dear, Canada...

Scotland warmed up for this one with Wednesday's friendly against our cousins from across the Atlantic. If the plan was to boost morale with a comfortable win, then it went awry at a blustery Easter Road, with a small crowd witnessing a drab 1-1 draw.

It's fair to say that none of those involved really made a strong case for inclusion this evening.

Leaders England have just cruised to a 2-0 win over Lithuania at Wembley, while Slovakia visit minnows Malta.

I guess we want England to run away with it, leaving Scotland to scrap it out for second place.

  5. Patience is the key - Marshallpublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 26 March 2017

    Scotland v Slovenia (19:45)

David Marshall knows Scotland must take all three points tonight to keep their qualification dream alive but he hopes the home fans will show patience if it's needed.

The goalkeeper, who is unavailable tonight due to injury, told BBC Radio Scotland's Sportsound: "The build-up and preparation would have started straight after the Canada game and we’ll know exactly what Slovenia bring.

"It’s must-win but you don't have to win it in the first 10 to 15 minutes. We want to keep it tight as long as possible. We’re at Hampden and if it’s 0-0 going into the last 20 minutes we know we’ll get that surge from the crowd."

  6. Tall order for Tierney?published at 18:50 British Summer Time 26 March 2017

    Scotland v Slovenia (19:45)

Celtic's Kieran Tierney is being deployed at right-back this evening, despite the 19-year-old being a lefty.

It happens further up the pitch all the time but is it a gamble in defence?

In days gone by, Scotland had two world class right-backs in Danny McGrain and Sandy Jardine, with the former often moved to the left.

Denis Irwin was a top left-back, who was naturally right-sided and James Milner has filled in to good effect in the same position at Liverpool this season.

I can't think of many left sided players going the other way though... Can you?

Gordon M: "At least most of this team should play like they've met before."

Jock McCruyff: "Been calling for Scotland team to be made up of mainly Celtic players for a while now, let's see if it makes a difference."

John B: "Can we find Scott Sinclair a Scottish granny?"

British Summer Time has certainly got off to a cracking start, with Scotland basking in glorious sunshine. Will the fantastic weather add a few more to the Hampden gate tonight? Tickets sales have been sluggish, with reports yesterday of 25,000 sold.

    Scotland v Slovenia (19:45)

It's a big night for Stuart Armstrong, who is making his international debut.

The 24-year-old Celtic midfielder has been in great form this season, scoring 12 goals.

Manager Gordon Strachan has chosen six players from his former club to start.

Scott Brown skippers the team and West Brom's James Morrison has overcome injury to play beside him in the engine room.

"There's no grey areas to it. It's must-win."

That's Scotland manager Gordon Strachan's assessment of this evening's encounter with Slovenia.

It really is last chance saloon after a poor start to World Cup qualifying.

    Will the revival start here?
