Ander Herrera has about 20 yards of space in front of him but by the time he actually gets his shot from distance in, Nicolas Otamendi throws himself at it to block it. Herrera could have played in Antonio Valencia.

United switch off at the back and Fernandinho is almost able to get onto a Kevin de Bruyne cross. It's been a bright start to this half from City. Pretty much started back where they left off in the first period.

Now Sergio Aguero has an 18-yard shot after stepping past a couple of defenders but his scuffed effort is held by De Gea.

City winger Raheem Sterling goes on a run from the halfway line, for a moment the United defence parts in the middle in front of him but eventually they force him wide and his shot is saved relatively easily by David de Gea.

Watching Mourinho teams is just like watching Tony Pulis teams. Defend, defend, defend a bit more and try and score from a set piece. Yet some people think he's a tactical genius and Pulis isn't. Strange.

Mufc Believer: Herrera the only atom of energy in the United midfield, but he can't do it alone. If only Fellaini and Carrick were on the pitch.

Let's be honest, it's not been a great football match to watch.

Jose has obviously set his side up to frustrate City and it's working.

Pep Guardiola will be having a few strong words in the dressing room I'd imagine.

That's a wonderful ball in from Rashford but look at that marking to allow Herrera his header.

We keep saying why haven't City been in the title challenge this season? That's why. The defending is appalling.

    Man City 0-0 Man Utd

There was one minute of injury time. Nothing happened in it. And the half-time whistle goes.

We're level at the end of a first half which City dominated but United should have led late on.

United's best chance of the half right at the end. Ander Herrera is totally unmarked six yards out and heads wide at the back post from Marcus Rashford's free-kick. A shocking miss.

There's nothing in that challenge really on Herrera but it's good to see this passion!

Tension is obviously high tonight - Mourinho would have these players riled up before the game. He will have told them how important it is to win every challenge.

City's 10th shot of the half is Raheem Sterling, who plays a one-two with Sergio Aguero, and lashes over the bar.

I can never really work out if Sterling is that good really. He's 22, at what stage do we stop talking about his potential?

Manchester City have had nine shots to United's one - when Henrikh Mkhitaryan should probably have done better from Claudio Bravo's error.

A bit of a flash point as Ander Herrera, who has a proper temper on him, grapples with Yaya Toure and then gets clattered by Fernandinho.

The Spaniard is not happy and both sets of players clash.

Martin Atkinson calms it all down and books nobody.

  20. Man City starting to exert authoritypublished at 20:40 British Summer Time 27 April 2017

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Etihad Stadium

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho spun around in fury as Marcus Rashford missed out on a 50/50 challenge - and he will be even more concerned by Manchester City's growing superiority.

Sergio Aguero is getting far too much space in and around the area. An open invitation to trouble.
