England are closing Scotland down very quickly when they pick up possession. They're trying to force them into errors and it's working for now. Anna Signeul's side are starting to see a little more of the ball but they just can't hold onto it.

PaulSchwarte: Good tempo, easy on the ball, positional game okay, impressive start.

  5. Postpublished at 20 mins

    England 1-0 Scotland

Man City's Jane Ross is going to have to work really hard tonight.

She's playing as the lone striker for Scotland and is up against two tall centre-backs in Steph Houghton and Millie Bright.

She's chasing down every long ball for now.

  6. Taylor makes her mark againpublished at 19 mins

    England 1-0 Scotland

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport in Utrecht

It might not be a big crowd inside the Stadion Galgenwaard, but the majority of them are English fans and they certainly made themselves heard after that Jodie Taylor goal.

For a player whose career stalled under former England boss Hope Powell, and who made her mark at the 2015 World Cup despite being injured, she's been relishing the chance to play in her first European Championship. What a start!

  7. 'England should be too strong'published at 18 mins

    England 1-0 Scotland

    Jonathan Pearce
Match of the Day commentator in the Netherlands

It is a great shame Kim Little is not here, she is a Scotland legend and they have a few others out injured too. England boss Mark Sampson is missing one or two that could have played tonight. Scotland’s Swedish coach Anna Signeul made some lovely comments about the national anthem saying she needs to listen to it carefully.

Scotland’s Gemma Fay is playing her 201st international, she says this is going to be the game of her life. They can cause England problems, but taking the emotions way, World Cup semi-finalists England should be too strong.

  8. Postpublished at 17 mins

    England 1-0 Scotland

A left-wing Scotland corner causes England some problems in the middle and captain Steph Houghton - who got her head to the clearance - looks a bit bruised. She appeared to fall over her own team-mate, Ellen White, while leaping.

She'll be OK to continue for now though.

  9. 'Scotland defence parted'published at 14 mins

    England 1-0 Scotland

    Chris McLaughlin
    BBC Sport Scotland in Utrecht

The Scotland defence will want to forget that quickly. They simply parted to allow Jodie Taylor through on goal. Very composed finish to give England the lead.

Anna Signeul said she wanted to keep England quiet for the first 15 minutes and turn the game into a battle. That has now gone so Scotland need a plan B. Those in white are looking fitter and faster for now though.

  10. Postpublished at 14 mins

    England 1-0 Scotland

Mark Sampson will be delighted with the early goal.

Now Scotland will have no choice but to play a bit more expansively rather than potentially sitting back.

  11. 'Scotland got stuck'published at 13 mins

    England 1-0 Scotland

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Ex-England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 live

I thought it was offside at first. The Scotland players got stuck and the ball rolled through. Jodie Taylor and Fran Kirby are two potentially world class players for England.

  12. 'Intelligent Kirby'published at 12 mins

    England 1-0 Scotland

    Pat Nevin
Ex-Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 live

A really good finish but the intelligence of Fran Kirby with the dummy is absolute genius. She took two players out of the game with a shimmy.

Her front partner Jodie Taylor ran through and finished it off.

GOAL - England 1-0 Scotlandpublished at 10 mins

    Jodie Taylor

Perfect start for England! Arsenal striker Jodie Taylor races on to a through ball after Fran Kirby's dummy, and she finishes in cool style.

Scotland were defending a high line there, and Taylor made them pay.

  14. Nobbs like an uncoiled springpublished at 10 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport in Utrecht

Blistering start by both teams, and Jordan Nobbs is like a uncoiled spring. She's all over the place at the minute.

The Arsenal midfielder and Manchester City right-back Lucy Bronze are among the fittest players in the squad and make for a really strong right side for England.

  15. Postpublished at 9 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

Scotland look to get the ball forward towards Jane Ross but it's a bit too strong, and runs out of play for a goal kick.

Both sides have started with intent.

  16. Sampson expects no Scotland surprisespublished at 8 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport in Utrecht

It's been a hot and humid day in Utrecht, with the temperature still about 27 degrees, which is perfect for England to test Mark Sampson's theory that his team are the "fittest in the tournament".

The squad has certainly put in the hard yards in preparation for Euro 2017, and Sampson says his team have done their homework on Scotland.

He said: "I think we are the best at looking at our opponents and identifying how to find a way to beat them. They've been very similar for the past four years in terms of their structure and style so it will be a big surprise if they try something new out there. But if they do we're the best team at adapting in international football."

  17. 'England knocking the ball around'published at 7 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

    Chris McLaughlin
    BBC Sport Scotland in Utrecht

England knocking the ball around with confidence in the midfield now as they look to stamp their authority on this match. They appear unfazed by that early Jane Ross effort that Karen Bardsley tipped over the bar.

  18. Postpublished at 6 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

England get their first shot on target away, but Arsenal midfielder Jordan Nobbs' low strike from outside the area is easily saved.

  20. A first for Pat Nevinpublished at 4 mins

    England 0-0 Scotland

    Pat Nevin
Ex-Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 live

I saw eight England players in a line on the edge of the 18-yard box for the corner. I have never seen that in a football match.
