    It was emotional seeing the girls singing the national anthem. This is the opening game, a lot of prep has gone into this and all the pressure is on England, they are expected to win.

    Monday's Group B action saw the reigning champions Germany held to a goalless draw by Sweden, in what had been one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the group stage.

    The Germans have won the Women's Euros a staggering six times in a row, stretching back to 1995.

    In Monday's teatime game, Italy were stunned by Russia, who won 2-1 in Rotterdam.

    Liverpool's Shanice van de Sanden headed in the winner in front of 21,732 Oranje fans in Utrecht.

    The other game in Group A saw Denmark overcome Belgium 1-0.

    Misfortune struck the Scots during their preparations for their first ever major tournament finals, with the loss of some of their best players through injury.

    Arsenal Ladies playmaker Kim Little - arguably one of Scotland Women's finest ever players - is among the absentees, as is commanding Manchester City Women centre-back Jen Beattie.

    Scotland boss Anna Signeul has described Little's injury as upsetting.

    When the players took to the field for their warm-ups with less than 40 minutes until kick-off, there was a very empty feeling in the stadium. It will no doubt fill, but there are suggestions only 5,000 tickets have been sold for a stadium which holds over 23,000.

    Both stands behind the goals are closed for the evening.
