Norway keeper Ingrid Hjelmseth said: "We played a good first half but the Netherlands showed they are playing in front of their home crowd.

"They were playing very well and we weren't just good enough."

Norway might have a greater pedigree but they were outplayed by a more vigorous and effervescent Netherlands side, who gave the tournament a perfect lift-off in front a record crowd.

The margin of victory appeared slim, and the Dutch should have been out of sight based on the number of chances they created and missed with Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema most culpable.

But in Lieke Martens and goalscorer Shanice van de Sanden, they have two potential stars of the tournament. On either flank, they simply destroyed the Norwegian defence.

When Van de Sanden broke down in tears at the final whistle, the pressure of performing in an opening game as a host nation was clear to see. They might not be hot favourites but with a buoyant crowd behind them, they can certainly challenge.

Next up for the Netherlands are Denmark on Thursday, while Norway will meet tournament debutants Belgium on the same night.

For all your mathematical geniuses out there, the result of that opening game puts the Dutch top of Group A with three points.

Norway are bottom of the table on goal difference.

Denmark and Belgium meet in the group's second game later on this evening.

Winning goalscorer Shanice van de Sanden is overcome with emotion as she races onto the field to greet her team-mates following their opening win.

The tournament needed a lift-off and everyone will have felt the pressure, from organisers through to the host nation. With that tension now relieved, the Netherlands have taken a huge step towards reaching the last eight.

Naturally, it's time to celebrate with some rave music as the players do a lap of honour!

It is so important for you to get the three points in the first game, but the performance from the Netherlands was fantastic too.

They have shown the rest of the group they are not here just because they are the hosts, they can play too.

With the crowd behind them, it is going to be tough to break them down.

The whole build-up to the goal was fantastic. Lieke Martens looked up and found Shanice van de Sanden, who finished off the cross with a header into the bottom corner.

Norway gather for a huddle on the field as they begin the discussions into what went wrong for them in that second half.

The Netherlands dominated after the break. They fully deserved their goal and their three points.

Joy for the host nation. Match-winner Shanice van de Sanden sprints back onto the pitch with happy tears in her eyes.

The Dutch have made a real statement tonight, beating the 2013 runners-up Norway, a side who contain world-class players including arguably the best striker in the world in Lyon's Ada Hegerberg. No goals for her tonight.

That's it! The hosts open Women's Euro 2017 with a win thanks to Liverpool's Shanice van de Sanden's goal.

Less than 20 seconds remain and the hosts are almost there.

The hosts wind down the clock by replacing Arsenal's Danielle van de Donk - who has had a fine game and gets a warm reception.

Then Norway's Ada Hegerberg can't quite connect with a bouncing ball at the far post.

Goal kick to the Netherlands.

As we enter three minutes of added time, the Netherlands' Jackie Groenen is booked. Free-kick to Norway on the halfway line.

Into the final minute of normal time and the Norwegians don't have the ball. They're being frustrated.

The 2013 finalists are running out of time to avoid starting this tournament with a loss.

Arsenal's Danielle van de Donk does very well to wind down the clock for the hosts, taking it out wide and keeping possession calmly.

We have two minutes of the 90 to go.

Norway get into the Dutch penalty area with striker Ada Hegerberg's presence but defender Kika van Es gets an important foot in.

Norway can't get hold of the ball in the Netherlands half. They're running out of time, and haven't really looked like scoring for around 25 minutes.

Netherlands right-back Desiree van Lunteren attempts to score her first international goal, but her left-footed shot from the right goes wide across the face of goal.
