From the past Euros that I have been to, it is getting bigger and bigger. The expectation on Netherlands is massive.

This is what all the hard work is for, they can go out and express themselves in front of their home crowd and they will be excited to do so.

  3. Postpublished at 3 mins

    Netherlands 0-0 Norway

At the other end, Norway play a long ball forward to Kristine Minde and she attempts to lob the keeper but she's just offside.

A lively start to the Euros in Utrecht.

The hosts almost lead immediately! What a start. Liverpool winger Shanice van de Sanden gets clear down the right byline and finds Arsenal's Danielle van de Donk in the middle, but her first-time shot is saved.

The waiting is over. After a pre-match Netherlands huddle led by Reading centre-back Mandy van den Berg, the hosts kick-off and the tournament begins.

Having chatted to several players who are in attendance here, the parents of Chelsea and Norway defender Maren Mjelde are excited rather than nervous to watch their daughter captain her side's start to the championship.

Father Paul talks passionately about Norway's tradition in this tournament, having already won it twice. But he guards against any over-optimism for their chances this time, as he points out they're a young side.

A measured stance from both sides, without hyperbole; so far, so European!

Ada Hegerberg won the BBC Women's Footballer of the Year award in 2017, voted for by thousands of fans across the globe.

She helped Lyon win the Women's Champions League final in Cardiff in June, after being voted as Uefa's Best Women's Player in Europe in 2016.

She's a real threat in the air and can score terrific goals with either foot. She's one to watch.

She starts alongside Arsenal teammates Sari van Veenendaal (GK) and Danielle van de Donk, plus Reading captain Mandy van den Berg and Liverpool's Shanice van de Sanden, but Arsenal's Dominque Janssen is on the Oranje bench.

Meanwhile, Chelsea's Maren Mjelde captains Norway, plus Birmingham City midfielder Andrine Hegerberg is a sub.

Netherlands fans are out in force in Utrecht ahead of their team's Euro 2017 opener against 2013 runners-up Norway, with fans wearing anything from cheese, crowns or cows on their heads.

Many are realistic about their team's chances in this tournament, only the third time it has appeared at the European Championship. Micke, who's taking cheese-related dress to new levels, sees a draw against Norway as a decent result, but with a sell-out crowd of 23,750 at Stadion Galgenwaard, the hosts won't be lacking support.

It's been a successful summer for England teams so far, with three trophies and a semi-final for the men's youth sides plus success for England's young Lionesses at the Nordic Cup... It all feels very un-British, all this winning.

So can Mark Sampson's side add more silverware to the trophy cabinet in three weeks time?
