    Brighton 0-2 Man City

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton midfielder Solly March: "It was a tough game and a tough introduction into the Premier League, but we know we aren't going to be facing teams like that every week. We are looking forward to next week.

"We had them under pressure for five minutes or so, but they are hard to play against.

"It was a special day for all of us and it was a proud moment to make my Premier League debut."

In the end the Brighton defence did not quite hold out, but for a team that had 75% of possession, Manchester City did not create many clear-cut chances.

Much of that was down to Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk. Yes, the latter was the scorer of an unfortunate own goal, and Duffy also gifted a golden chance to Sergio Aguero with the score at 0-0, but otherwise Brighton's centre-backs were very much their rocks at the back.

Manchester City were able to bring on Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane today. Must be one of the most expensive and talented trio of subs in Premier League history.

  6. 'City were better in all departments'published at 19:46 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Brighton 0-2 Man City

It could have been different if Brighton had scored first, not that they looked like they were going to, but it would have given them something to hold on to. They were struggling to get a foot in from the get-go. City were better in all departments, except for maximum effort on Brighton's part.

  7. 'We are a strong club'published at 19:44 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Brighton 0-2 Man City

    Manchester City

Man City boss Pep Guardiola told BBC Sport: "We had chances in the first minutes. We have controlled the counter-attacks and we didn't concede one chance. We are going to improve the way we attack.

"I was very happy with the new players. I want to say thank you to the club. We have huge players with lots of talent. Big congratulations to all the people in Manchester City - we are a strong club.

"I want to continue with what we did in the last three games of pre-season. We were stable but we have to try to improve. The most important thing was to win the first game."

  8. Postpublished at 19:43 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has just thanked the club for making all their summer signings. He says he won't necessarily stick to a three/five-man defence this season. More to come from his BBC Sport interview soon.

'It was always going to be difficult for us to score'published at 19:41 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Brighton 0-2 Man City

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Chris Hughton told BBC Sport: "It is disappointing but that is the quality Manchester City have got and we know that.

"We can take a lot of positives from the game. When you are playing Champions League quality teams, you know that they can hurt you.

"It was always going to be difficult for us to score. We have to make sure that come the end of the window, we have a squad that can do well enough in this division. We have to win the games that we can do.

"The fans have been absolutely brilliant in my time here and I think they are realistic. They will certainly be behind us. It is a wonderful place to be and a wonderful place to play."

Expect it will read something like:

We weren't great but we got the job done.

I won't wear the beige slacks next week.

    See you soon,

  12. 'It is better to play with a smile on your face'published at 19:31 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Brighton 0-2 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City debutant Kyle Walker told BT Sport: "We needed the win and it was good to get off to a good start, so we are happy.

"I am enjoying working with the club, the lads have been so welcoming and I am enjoying my football. It is better to play with a smile on your face."

  13. 'We have quality in the team'published at 19:30 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Brighton 0-2 Man City

    Manchester City

City captain Vincent Kompany told BT Sport: "We had to be patient the first half, they were defending well and they had a clear game plan, but we have quality in the team.

"The season is going to be long, but today was an improvement on what we did last season. We got the goal because we were patient."

  14. Postpublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

Brighton only had 22% of the ball today. Their goalkeeper Mat Ryan played more passes than any of their outfield players. They had six shots, two on target, two off target and two blocked - but never really felt like scoring.

  15. Postpublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

It's hard to draw too many conclusions from this game really. Manchester City will face much better teams than Brighton this season - opponents who will test their new defenders and goalkeeper a lot more.

Likewise, Brighton looked a bit short of quality. But then again they won't be facing teams full of £40m players every week.

  16. 'The scoreline flatters Brighton'published at 19:25 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Brighton 0-2 Man City

    Fred Eyre
Former Man City player on BBC Radio Manchester

As the game wore on, it was just a matter of when the Brighton defence would crack. Aguero was inevitably the man who opened the scoring and opened the floodgates.

The second goals was an unfortunate own goal for Lewis Dunk because he held the back four together with his mate Shane Duffy.

I think the scoreline does actually flatter Brighton, and it could have been a lot more.

    And that means...

Huddersfield Town - who beat Crystal Palace 3-0 - will spend a night top of the English league for the first time since August 1970. Just another 37 games to hang in there, lads.

    Brighton 0-2 Man City

    Fred Eyre
Former Man City player on BBC Radio Manchester

When they start stringing passes together, especially with no pressure like now, it is just like watching a training session. With this quality of players, it must be frightening to watch them in the comfort of the Etihad.
