Tottenham get their Premier League campaign off to a winning start with victory over 10-man Newcastle.

Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez to BBC Sport: "It was difficult from the beginning. We had to adapt things [after injuries]. The red card changed everything. I think we were defending well. We have to improve. We had our chances but we missed them."

He thought Harry Kane's foul on Florian Lejeune, which resulted in a yellow card and an injury, was worse than Jonjo Shelvey's stamp on Dele Alli, for which he was sent off.

"The Harry Kane tackle was worse than this one. It’s more dangerous. We lost one player from that. We made a mistake, but I think maybe someone has to analyse these things to see what’s more dangerous."

He explains that previous comments he made that right-back Kyle Walker-Peters wasn't ready to play were a language issue.

He clarified that he meant it would be too much pressure to expect the 20-year-old to play the whole season.

He told BBC Sport: "For a young player, don't put pressure on him. He showed in the USA that he was ready to play. It’s important to keep his feet on the grass, it’s only one Premier League game."

Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino to BBC Sport: "We knew how they play, so narrow and deep. It was difficult to move the ball quickly. We had control and we were helped by the red card but I think we deserved to win the game.

"It was not easy to find the space and create chances. It’s important to improve. In a stadium that doesn’t have good memories for us, it was important to win. It was a clear red card.

"If Harry Kane had scored to make it 3-0 at the end, that would have been a bit more fair."

Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has just given a pretty terse interview to Sky Sports when asked about whether he would have a meeting with owner Mike Ashley about signing players.

"I don't know." When he was asked if it was up to Ashley whether they met, he said "yes". and then he added: "I am concentrating on my job and my players."

Benitez agreed that Jonjo Shelvey deserved his red card: "The sending off changed everything. He made a mistake. Hopefully he will learn from it. He has apologised but that changes nothing now."

Newcastle United

Newcastle midfielder Christian Atsu tells Sky Sports that Jonjo Shelvey has apologised to his team-mates for his red card: "It became more difficult when the red card came.

"That’s football. Mistakes do happen. He’ll learn from his mistakes. He’s upset with himself. He thinks he let the team down. We are really behind him. We believe he will come back stronger. He apologised to everyone."

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham defender Kyle Walker-Peters told Sky Sports he learned yesterday that he would be making his Premier League debut.

"I found out yesterday in training before we worked on tactics and shape work. I was a bit nervy, nerves are good though. A few of the boys tried to tease me about it.

"Playing here, it's a fantastic stadium. Most importantly we got the three points."

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham goalscorer Dele Alli on Jonjo Shelvey’s red card for standing on him, to Sky Sports: “We knew it was going to be a physical game. It's not an easy place to come. It happens sometimes.

"I'm sure he'll be disappointed. it was important we stayed professional. I don't want to talk about it too much. I've had a few talks with the gaffer in the past [about his temperament]. I've been pulled up for my temper before but today we had to keep our cool. There was no need to react today.”

Mark Ryan: People too harsh on Newcastle. Spurs are a top team. Plenty more to play for against teams not of this calibre.

Ruz: Yes disgraceful from Alli to make Shelvey stand on his ankle and not get it out of the way fast enough. Very unsporting of him.

There are just no easy games and Newcastle are going to find this. It is so difficult to compete at this level. I think they were up against it from early on Newcastle. Tottenham have dominated this football match. Newcastle's work rate you cannot fault, but it is going to be a long season.

No problems for Tottenham, who collect all three points.

Newcastle, though, have problems to deal with.

Javier Manquillo has been steady and had a bit of pace. He has got a good engine and I am sure he will get better.

Florian Lejeune looked comfortable on the ball but we did not see enough of him.

Kyle Walker-Peters looks comfortable and looks like he fits in very well with the team.

Mousa Dembele's work is done, off he comes for Harry Winks.

Is the Spurs sub the only player in the Premier League named after an emoji?

Keep ball for Spurs now, easily seeing out the game.

Who needs signings when they can put in a performance like this?

Albeit against 10 man Newcastle, who have offered very little.
