Mister Ged: Mourinho had everyone playing superbly; Matic exceptional - everyone 'on it', delighted that Phil Jones looked solid!

Peter Passmore: Pogba stepping it up and not trying to over complicate simple situations. Great stuff.

Joey: Matic looking like the steal of the summer. Chelsea sold their title credentials by giving Matic away.

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic told BBC Sport: “We have to admit they were better than us in every department. Better on the ball, off the ball and in 50-50 challenges. If you make the mistakes like we did from promising situations, add to that a set-piece goal, then it is hard to play. On the counter-attack they are good with their pace. 4-0 is a disastrous result for us.

“We were not happy at 2-0 and wanted someone up front with Chicharito, that is why we put Diafra Sakho on. We created some good situations.

“This is the worst scenario that could have happened to us but we cannot change it and we have to pick ourselves up off the floor for the next game.

“It is hard to talk about the pluses when you lose 4-0. Some players are coming back from injury."

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to BBC Sport: "The Premier League taught me that you need to be adaptive to perform immediately. Both Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic have years and years of Premier League experience, it is easy for them compared to Victor Lindelof who needs time.

“Nemanja is top player with a top stability and we need that. Romelu is aggressive so they improve our team and the way we work. We have conditions to be a better team this season than last season.

"Romelu can gives us aerial threat, protect the ball and a good way out for us. I repeat, we are not on the moon but it is a good start. I enjoyed the confidence levels.

"On Friday, I was in front of the TV and I enjoyed it a lot. The Arsenal-Leicester result is a consequence of the way they play."

Manchester United could not have done much more than they did today.

It is their biggest opening day win since a 5-1 triumph over Fulham in 2006.

However, Jose Mourinho will know his side were just as impressive when they defeated Bournemouth on the opening day last season - and they finished sixth. Four years ago, they won 4-1 at Swansea under David Moyes. That was a false dawn too.

Mourinho's task is to ensure this does not represent another.

    Man Utd 4-0 West Ham

In his 1-2-3-4 predictions this week, former Manchester United defender Phil Neville had this to say: "The signing of Romelu Lukaku is a big part of the reason why I have gone for Manchester United to win the title - basically because, for them to win the league, they will have to score a lot more goals.

"If you destroy someone 4-0 then that sends a message out and brings in a fear factor you don't get by beating teams 1-0. That is what I want to see more of from United, and Lukaku can help them do it."

    Nailed it.

  9. 'Confidence and performance are key'published at 18:23 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

    Man Utd 4-0 West Ham

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is important for new players in new clubs, everybody expects goals from the striker. It is nice for Morata, Rooney, Lukaku, Lacazette to score. It is nice for their confidence.

"The fact we start winning and are top, it means nothing. The performance and the levels of confidence is what means a lot to me. We lost two points against them last season and had similar games where we were dominated. Today we got the three points.

"The reality is that in the last part of the game, instead of being boring and controlling the game, we scored a third goal and we could enjoy it."

Bear: As a Chelsea fan... I'm appalled at selling Matic...

Yousif: I don't think the comments people making about Hernandez are fair. So he didn't have the best of games, it's away to Man United. He will get better.

The big word this season used at United is excitement and there was plenty of that today. United have put a marker down and for me they are the title favourites, and there is no reason for me to change my mind.

  12. 'A positive performance'published at 18:14 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

    Man Utd 4-0 West Ham

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to Sky Sports: "The game was difficult, it was open at 2-0 and they had a chance to score. It was not a 4-0 game. When you relax, you play with confidence.

"We did not start especially well, we looked nervous but then we put in a quality performance. A word that I like is confidence, they played with confidence and played football. It was a very positive performance."

  13. 'The fans want to see attractive football'published at 18:09 British Summer Time 13 August 2017

    Man Utd 4-0 West Ham

    Manchester United

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku, speaking to Sky Sports: "To play in front of such a crowd is a dream come true but most importantly is the three points.

"When you play for Manchester United, you have a job to do and mine is to score goals. It is promising.

"The manager wants me to be a leader for the team and create as much as I can. We work hard in training and it is paying off.

"The fans want to see attractive football and we have to stick to that. They will be pleased today. It is just the start, we need to keep working to the manager's plan."

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a really important game for us to start well with the three points. They were very compact but after the first goal we had more space. I am very happy for the team and we we will have more confidence going into the next game.

"The manager told me I have to do my job, Paul has to do his. I am very happy everyone gave their best against a good team. We have to continue to work like this."

We saw almost right from the start Romelu Lukaku on the left wing, and as great as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was to watch last season, to now have Romelu Lukaku doing that while you have Marcus Rashford on the pitch as well is great. There is pressure here.

Manchester United are my tips to win the title. Nobody can accuse United of being boring or dull today. Without getting carried away, it is the first day of the season, West Ham had a few new signings and were confident, but United have totally, totally destroyed them.

It is 4-0 and Paul Pogba has the goal that this all-round player deserves. What a win here for Jose Mourinho and his Manchester United team. This is some start and I never believe in the league table at this stage in the season, however the league tables will be printed and we will see Manchester United at the top of the table.
