Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy has gained a reputation for being one of the tougher characters in football over his 40 years in the game.

The Town boss fielded a virtual youth team in the 2-1 EFL Cup defeat by Crystal Palace on Tuesday and says he feels his reputation is perhaps a touch unfair.

"There is a misconception about me and how I manage. Yes I kick every ball and yes I shout and if they don't do things right I growl at them," he said.

"I'm also the first one to congratulate them and put my arm around them and tell them they've done well.

"I'll console someone if it's gone wrong. I've made enough mistakes in my life and it's nice if someone understands and says to you 'that's ok'."

As previously mentioned it's going very well for Cardiff at the moment.

The Bluebirds are top of the table and centre-half Sol Bamba signed a new three-year deal on Friday, much to the delight of boss Neil Warnock.

"I know how good he is - I would not worry about playing Bamba if he was in the top flight, let alone the Championship. That is how much I rate him," he said.

"I had quite a number of enquiries for him in the summer, I don't want to anything to start cropping up. He's loving it at the moment you can see by the way he's playing.

  4. Grateful Graysonpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 26 August 2017

Sunderland boss Simon Grayson will be hoping his side can bounce back from their home defeat by Leeds last Saturday.

The Black Cats could have as many as 5,000 fans at Oakwell today and the former Preston boss says it is something he appreciates.

"I've always gone to away fans at the end of a game because win, lose or draw people have given up their time and money to come and watch us," he told BBC Radio Newcastle

"It's not cheap to go to game in this day and age. It was £40 plus for a ticket at Sheffield Wednesday the other week and when you add in the travel costs that's a dear day out.

"The players should show their appreciation and I think we're getting that unity back together again and hopefully that will continue. It can inspire the players."

It's 40 years since Barnsley beat Rochdale 4-0 in the old fourth division on 20 August 1977.

Making his league debut for his hometown team that day was teenage defender Mick McCarthy.

It was a big day for McCarthy, who had cleaned the boots of Tykes winger Neil Warnock during his time as an apprentice.

Four decades on the old team-mates have led their sides, Ipswich and Cardiff respectively, to the only 100% starts in the Championship.

Depending on how other results go today the pair could go into the international break five points clear of the chasers.

Good afternoon and welcome to Saturday's EFL live text coverage.
