  1. 'Dalglish-esque from Shearer!'published at 16:30 British Summer Time 15 August 2017

    Crystal Palace 2-3 Blackburn

    Alan Hansen
    Former Scotland and Liverpool defender

That second Alan Shearer goal was like Kenny Dalglish at his best, running inside and curling it into the corner. If he has half the career Kenny did he'll be doing well!

  2. goal

GOAL - Leeds 2-1 Wimbledonpublished at 86 mins

    Lee Chapman (86 mins)

    Lee Chapman

    Is that the winner?!

Lee Chapman has bagged his second of the afternoon and it may just be enough to give the champions a winning start.

Eric Cantona nods the ball into his path and Chapman smashes a shot in which Hans Segers can't keep out at his near post.

  3. goal

GOAL - Chelsea 1-1 Oldhampublished at 86 mins

    Nick Henry (86 mins)

Oh another calamity! It's not been the best of days for goalkeepers and centre backs and another pickle ends in an Oldham equaliser!

Dave Beasant fluffs a kick out and Nick Henry, from just inside the Chelsea half, side-foots it back and in for the Latics. Good finish!

    Surely not...

Currently creating banner to display at Anfield: "Come back when you've won 18!" If Man U can't even beat the Blades, they'll be stuck on 7 titles forever! LOL!

  5. Postpublished at 85 mins

    Sheffield United 2-1 Manchester United

Goals elsewhere but not in Sheffield for the men in blue. Another move ends with Mike Phelan shanking a shot well wide.

If Alex Ferguson is to end a generation of title woe he needs better options in the middle than Phelan and his son, you feel.

    A flurry of late goals!

  7. goal

GOAL - Arsenal 2-4 Norwichpublished at 84 mins

    Mark Robins (84 mins)

    That seals it!

Even the greats are struggling with this new-fangled backpass rule on opening day. Tony Adams doesn't deal with a long, straight ball and Mark Robins is onto it quick as you like before a sumptuous lob over David Seaman. A wonderful goal from Robins, who only came on after half-time!

It's his second and Norwich's fourth.

  8. goal

GOAL - Ipswich 1-1 Aston Villapublished at 84 mins

    Dalian Atkinson (84 mins)

Villa have been handed the equaliser! Ipswich fall apart at the back as a shocker of a backpass lets Cyrille Regis in, the big man has time to pick a cross and Dalian Atkinson converts at the back stick.

  9. goal

GOAL - Chelsea 1-0 Oldhampublished at 84 mins

    Mick Harford (84 mins)

Screamer! It's a debut goal for the big man as Mick Harford puts Chelsea ahead but it's not a header as you may have expected - a rifled shot from the edge of the area into the top corner.

    Lovely stuff.

  10. CLOSE!published at 82 mins

    Sheffield United 2-1 Manchester United

Can Manchester United break down the massed Blades defence? It just hasn't looked likely all afternoon. A long spell of play ends with Darren Ferguson firing wide from 20 yards.

  11. Postpublished at 16:25 British Summer Time 15 August 2017

    Crystal Palace 2-3 Blackburn

I'm not sure if £3.6m can ever be classed as 'well spent' but you don't get many goals on debut better than either of Alan Shearer's this afternoon...

  12. goal

GOAL - Arsenal 2-3 Norwichpublished at 82 mins

    Ruel Fox (82 mins)

    Well, well, well!

A major shock is brewing in north London as Arsenal, the favourites for the title with many, now trail Norwich. Ruel Fox is played in on goal and there's no catching the winger, he's lightning quick and drives under David Seaman.

  13. goal

GOAL - Crystal Palace 2-3 Blackburnpublished at 81 mins

    Alan Shearer (81 mins)

Oh that's even better! Another belter from Alan Shearer, out of absolutely nothing!

A long ball forward is chased by Shearer down the left wing, he is allowed to come inside and from fully 25 yards he bends a shot inside the far post to give Rovers the lead for the first time!

    Sensational. Really is.

Charlie's Right Foot: I'm in the Clock End today. Can't believe a reject like Mark Robins has changed this game. The North Bank mural looks fed up.

  15. The closing stages...published at 16:22 British Summer Time 15 August 2017

Can Arsenal find a response? Will Manchester United level it up? How about Blackburn or Chelsea?

Still all to play for in the last 10 minutes or so...

  16. Postpublished at 77 mins

    Sheffield United 2-1 Manchester United

The first effort on goal for Dion Dublin in a Manchester United shirt, bringing the ball down on his thigh and firing in from an angle. He hits it well but it's always straight at Simon Tracey.

That young lad Shearer at Blackburn; first we let Gazza go, now this....the fans won't put up with it much longer you know. They won't.

  18. Postpublished at 76 mins

    Sheffield United 2-1 Manchester United

Into the last quarter of an hour at Bramall Lane. The visitors are leaving just Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister back at times as they flood forwards but their game plan is not really advanced beyond hitting Dion Dublin and hoping to pick up the pieces.

  19. goal

GOAL - Leeds 1-1 Wimbledonpublished at 76 mins

    Warren Barton (76 mins)

An outrageous fluke! And the champions are pegged back.

Warren Barton lofts the ball forwards, it was pretty much just a clearance from all of 40+ yards. A hit and hope, and it sails over John Lukic and into the far corner!

An opening day of shocks looks set to continue!

  20. CLOSE!published at 73 mins

    Sheffield United 2-1 Manchester United

It's all Manchester United now as they have Brian McClair behind Dion Dublin and Mark Hughes.

'In the hole' I believe it is being called by some upstarts.
