  1. CLOSE!published at 29 mins

    Manchester City 1-0 Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold scored a free-kick from similar range recently, but this time it's Emre Can, who side-foots it wide. Good shape to the strike though.

Liverpool still carry a threat, especially down the right hand side.

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 27 mins

    Manchester City 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool instantly get into the box at the other end, Mo Salah has a cross cleared before Fernandinho is booked for chopping down Sadio Mane, who made a superb run from his own half!

Nicolas Otamendi nailed Mane on the floor there. Ooof.

The key was that pass from De Bruyne. It was a great ball through the gap. A brilliant goal.

GOAL - Manchester City 1-0 Liverpoolpublished at 24 mins

    Sergio Aguero

There's the breakthrough! And it's so easy, easy. Simon Mignolet's kick downfield is not good, Fernandino gobbles up the ball and finds Kevin de Bruyne, who instantly slices Liverpool in half with a peach of a pass.

Sergio Aguero is in, he dances past Mignolet and rolls it home. His 124th Premier League goal. More than any other non-European.

Even with Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino on the edge of the City box, keeper Ederson still plays it short to John Stones. Pressure? Well dealt with.

Igboegwu: It's like City's players are still on international break.

Nick Wagstaff: This has got 0-0 written all over it.

Jerry Elumeze: For all the money they have spent in the last three seasons, City's squad looks lopsided.

Nicolas Otamendi (number 30) has started on the left side of Manchester City's three-man defence and that is where Liverpool have looked to attack in the early stages (see below), especially after that early yellow card for the Argentine.

Otamendi has been given little protection by left full-back Benjamin Mendy (number 22).

    Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool

Kevin de Bruyne's pass inside is awry and there are groans around the Etihad, they know what's coming. Here comes the Liverpool counter, Emre Can to Alberto Moreno, into Sadio Mane, into the area...

Mo Salah then skins Nicolas Otamendi so easily to burst into the ox, but his cross/shot is weak.

It's a slight shirt pull but I have to say De Bruyne threw himself at the ground pretty hard there. He knew what he was doing.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20 mins

    Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold has made a fine start to his Liverpool career but a shaky start to this game. He's beaten by Kevin de Bruyne and can only pull him over. Booked.

  13. Antimated touchline anticspublished at 12:49 British Summer Time 9 September 2017

    Man City 0-0 Liverpool

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

We have a pair of expressive managers on the touchline today.

Jurgen Klopp had a long chat with fourth official Craig Pawson after taking issue over a free-kick that had gone against his team. The German then flew into a rage after a mistake from his team, although it was not entirely obvious who he was waving his arms at.

To Klopp's left, Guardiola had his head in his hands at the latest error by Nicolas Otamendi.

I think we have seen some decent football so far but we have only had three poor shots from distance.

  15. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool

It's the sort of game we were expecting without the early goal. Both sides are playing at full pelt, neither look particularly solid at the back. Emre Can shoots from long-range for Liverpool but he can't worry Ederson.

    Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool

City have been on top but here come Liverpool down either flank. First Mo Salah burns off Nicolas Otamendi, and then a Mo Salah one-two stretches City down their left.

A Jordan Henderson cross finally has the hosts in more bother but Roberto Firmino can't steer in at the far post.

  18. GREAT SAVE!published at 14 mins

    Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool

First real save of the day. Fernandinho lets fly with a low bobbler from fully 25 yards which is creeping into the far corner until Simon Mignolet pushes it away.

  19. Mendy on full powerpublished at 12:43 British Summer Time 9 September 2017

    Manchester City 0-0 Liverpool

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Etihad Stadium

Jordan Henderson felt the full force of a Benjamin Mendy challenge and took a while to get up - and there is a lot of Mendy force to feel. He is a very big unit.

Manchester City are already missing the composure and leadership of captain Vincent Kompany. Nicolas Otamendi has made a horrible start.
