  2. Moore and Brandon start for Heartspublished at 12:08 British Summer Time 5 August 2017

    Celtic v Hearts (12:30)

Jon Daly has put his imprint on the Hearts team straight away by picking 19-year-old midfielder Lewis Moore for only his second senior game.

Moore's only previous outing was an end-of-season draw with St Johnstone in May 2016 and he spent last season on loan at Cowdenbeath, who narrowly avoided relegation from League Two in a play-off.

Fellow 19-year-old Jamie Brandon also starts, with new arrivals Kyle Lafferty, Christophe Berra, Rafal Grzelak and Michael Smith also in the starting line-up and another, Connor Randall, on the bench.

As Daly said, Rangers target Jamie Walker is not involved, so winger Moore is there to provide width.

Celtic make three changes from their midweek Champions League victory over Rosenborg in Norway.

Olivier Ntcham is preferred to Stuart Armstrong in midfield, Leigh Griffiths starts up front, with Jonny Hayes also dropping to the bench, while Nir Bitton replaces Erik Sviatchenko in defence after coming on for the injured Dane in Trondheim.

  4. Big Jon is in the housepublished at 12:05 British Summer Time 5 August 2017

    Celtic v Hearts (12:30)

Hearts arrive in turmoil following the sacking of head coach Ian Cathro after a poor start to the season in the League Cup compounded a disappointing end to last season.

Jon Daly, who had been enjoying a gentle introduction to coaching with the under-20s, has been thrust into the limelight as caretaker and already declared himself ready to inherit the post full-time.

Can the big Irishman stand up to the pressure and prove his worth?

He couldn't have chosen a more difficult place to start.

  6. Celtic eye double treblepublished at 11:57 British Summer Time 5 August 2017

    Celtic v Hearts (12:30)

Brendan Rodgers' Celtic return triumphant from their progress to the play-off stage of the Champions League hoping to serve up a double treble on the domestic table.

That sounds like some dodgy drinks order in a tacky Spanish resort, but Rodgers and co won't mind the awkwardness of the term if they complete a clean sweep of the domestic silverware for a second season running.

They certainly start as strong favourites to secure a seventh straight Scottish title.

Doing so without losing a domestic game for a second season running appears like a tall order, but it will probably be among the new targets Rodgers has set for his squad.

He set seven for last season, six of them achieved, but captain Scott Brown says more have been added this term.

  8. Welcome back Hibeespublished at 11:51 British Summer Time 5 August 2017

It is a particularly significant day for Hibernian and their fans as they make their return to the top flight after three seasons in the second tier.

Neil Lennon's Championship-winning side will be ushering in their new season by testing their Premiership credentials against Partick Thistle, who had a top-six finish for the first time since the late-season split was introduced.

But that comes later - one of three traditional 15:00 kick-offs - after Celtic unfurl their title flag first at home to troubled Hearts.

  9. Here we go, where we've gone beforepublished at 11:47 British Summer Time 5 August 2017

Dark brooding skies, thunderous showers, intermittent spells of warm sunshine to dry your rain-soaked clothes. Yes, it's a typical start to the Scottish football league season.

Also increasingly familiar are the words "Celtic begin the defence of their title". And "three of Scotland's four representatives start their domestic campaign having already exited European competition".

At least this summer we can once again bask in typically glorious failure at a major finals - only this time it was Scotland's women who bowed out one agonising goal short of progressing from the group stage.

But there's still lots to look forward to - honest!
