  1. 'I thought we were ready'published at 17:28 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    West Brom 1-0 Bournemouth

    Bournemouth

Eddie Howe speaking in the West Brom tunnel: "I am disappointed. It is unlike us to have so much possession and to not create chances- that is the most disappointing thing. The build-up to the goal was very disappointing. We gave away a needless free-kick, and against West Brom that is a dangerous thing.

"We have had enough football in pre-season to be ready. I thought we were ready. The pitch was slow, and that is not an excuse.

"I expected us to have the possession that we did but I thought we would have been more creative with it. There is obviously stuff for us to work on."

Eddie Howe's face was telling all kinds stories. Bournemouth were deservedly beaten.

He said he "thought they were ready".

  3. An unusual nicknamepublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Crystal Palace 0-3 Huddersfield

    Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield defender Mathias Jorgensen has been speaking post match and explains why he wears the name 'Zanka' on the back of his shirt.

He said: "It has been a nickname since I was 10 and it stuck. It comes from the character in the film Cool Runnings. I wanted it on my shirt."

  4. 'During 90 minutes, there are no friends'published at 17:23 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Everton 1-0 Stoke

    Stoke City

Stoke City midfielder Darren Fletcher: "We were undone by a moment of brilliance. It was undeserved coming in at half-time.

"I'm friends with Wayne [Rooney] but when we're on the pitch that goes out of the window. During 90 minutes there are no friends. But after the game I congratulated him on his goal and I hope he has a great season."

Brighton v Manchester City (17:30 BST)

Still one game to come today of course...

Brighton's Premier League debut at home to the free-spending Manchester City gets going in about 10 minutes.

You can follow that over here.

  6. 'That's a huge result'published at 17:18 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Chelsea 2-3 Burnley

    Burnley

Sam Vokes, scorer of a double for Burnley, in the Stamford Bridge tunnel: "We were sloppy at times but we ground the result out and we're delighted as a result.

"That's a huge result - a lot was made of our away form last season. So that result is huge, a massive win for us at the start of the season.

"It was always going to be tough here but we got our heads down and put in a performance."

  7. 'This is football'published at 17:17 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Southampton 0-0 Swansea

    Southampton

Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino: "We did everything to win the game but we couldn't. We controlled the ball, created chances but this is football - you have to get goals and we couldn't do so.

"As a manager, we can work on how to create chances but sometimes it is really difficult to score - we had 29 shots.

"Swansea is a good team, they were ready to attack us but we were well balanced and that was the key to controlling the game in the second half. For us it is best to keep going, keep training and we have another game on Saturday

"I think we have quality and spirit in the team."

Southampton had 29 shots but only two on target.

Wonder what the new boss makes of that?..

  9. 'Chelsea did not look like champions'published at 17:14 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

You could not take your eyes off Burnley's win - they struggled away from home last season but have a win this season at the first time of asking.

Chelsea did not look like champions at all, they were arguing among each other, and there are some very real problems there.

  10. 'We suffered at times'published at 17:12 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Southampton 0-0 Swansea

    Swansea City

Swansea boss Paul Clement said: "It was a hard afternoon, they had a massive amount of chances, set play after set play and we suffered at times.

"I'm happy we ended up with a point and it could have been a lot worse. The last-gasp defending was good but we didn't use the ball well enough further up the pitch.

"We are pleased we have got out of here with a draw. Every game we play we have to try to get points on the board and look to play better. I'm sure they will be disappointed and think 'how have we not won'."

    Southampton 0-0 Swansea

I think Swansea manager Paul Clement will be pretty happy to take a draw from a dire match at Southampton. The home side had the better chances - Saints really were wasteful - and the Swans struggled to create.

  12. Postpublished at 17:10 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Chelsea 2-3 Burnley

A positive for Chelsea today, perhaps the only positive, was Alvaro Morata's debut. He got a goal and an assist but it's at the other end of the pitch that will be of concern. They fell apart without Gary Cahill in defence.

  13. 'At 3-0 up we should have made it safer'published at 17:09 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Chelsea 2-3 Burnley

    Burnley

Burnley midfielder Jack Cork, formerly of Chelsea: "They made it hard for us in the second half but a win’s a win and we’ve got three points on the board.

"Stephen Ward has a wand of a left foot - it was a great strike, a great goal!

"At 3-0 up we should have made it safer, but we got there in the end. It's always good to have a good start in the Premier League - it means a lot to us and to all the fans that came here and those at home."

  14. Postpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    West Brom 1-0 Bournemouth

I think I described Ahmed Hegazi as the Egyptian John Terry earlier. Better comparison is David Luiz actually. Looks like a bit of a player - and his headed, match-winning goal, wasn't too shabby either. Towering.

  15. 'I will take a picture of the table'published at 17:07 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Crystal Palace 0-3 Huddersfield

    Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield striker Steve Mounie: "It is amazing, a start like this and for me to score two goals on my Premier League debut. We won our first game and it is amazing for the fans, coach and all the people in Huddersfield.

"We worked all day during pre-season, we worked hard and the coach gave a us a lot of advice. The consequences of our work has shown and we hope we do well in the next game.

On being top of the Premier League: "It is crazy, I will take a picture of the table."

  17. 'We worked hard for the goal'published at 17:06 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    West Brom 1-0 Bournemouth

    West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich match-winner Ahmed Hegazi: "It is a fantastic feeling. It is a very important thing that the team is winning.

"We worked hard for the goal. We played compact. I hope we continue like this in the rest of the season. I know before, we had fantastic defenders in our team. We tried to do more.

I will try to do the maximum for me and the team and I hope to continue here in the Premier League, for sure."

  18. 'A huge deal'published at 17:02 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Everton 1-0 Stoke

Everton match-winner Wayne Rooney: "On a personal level scoring the winning goal at Goodison Park is a special moment. It doesn't get much better.

"To play for this club is a huge deal for me. The early games in the season are always tough because you are always finding your rhythm in games.

"We've got some tough games coming up so it's important we got off to a good start."

  20. 'Burnley are the deserved winners'published at 16:59 British Summer Time 12 August 2017

    Chelsea 2-3 Burnley

    Pat Nevin
Ex-Chelsea winger at Stamford Bridge for 5 live Sport

Over the entirety of the game Burnley are the deserved winners.

Until Morata came on the Clarets were the better side by a distance. When it came to it, it was the sending off of Cahill that made a real difference.

Chelsea were simply insipid until they fell 3-0 down. Then Conte made some changes and it completely changed the game - you have to ask why the changes didn't happen earlier.

Good luck to the nation's football reporters, trying to distill that into 800 words!
