Renato Sanches is a player I worked with briefly and when I realised that he was available it was a shot in the dark. If you don't ask, you don't get.

There was a lot of interest in him but the talks developed over the summer and we could offer him regular football. I am delighted to have him. It hasn't been an easy transition for him at Bayern but that is a team with a lot of experienced, quality midfielders. He didn't get the minutes he would have liked but now he is looking to the future. He will develop with us in a very competitive league.

  4. 'It is down to the players'published at 15:41 British Summer Time 10 September 2017

    Burnley 1-0 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend on Sky Sports: “Not taking chances has been a theme every game so far this season - but that has got to change and the start was a hammer blow."

Improved? “Yes of course, we created more clear-cut chances and should have got at least one, maybe two goals, but we didn’t and this is a result’s based business and we lost again.

“It is down to the players – the manager sets up the team and we created chances but we need to put them away.”

No! Here's the header that Scott Dann somehow put wide right at the end. Gutting stuff.

You have to give Frank de Boer a chance. It was an individual mistake that led to the goal.

If you press the button this soon in the season then it is one step forward, two steps back. I feel you stick with him, especially with the way they kept going to the end of the match. But you look at their fixtures and it doesn't get any easier.

You know what you get from Sean Dyche's side, they will be working hard and be compact.

This will be a big relief for them and they will hope to make Turf Moor a fortress again. In general Burnley have looked more like their old selves.

Palace's next Premier League matches are Southampton H, Manchester City A, Manchester United H, Chelsea H.

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace captain Jason Puncheon: "It is very difficult to take, we got punished for one mistake. On another day we would have got at least one point.

"Scott Dann is normally good in front of goal, it is just one of those days. I would like to think the manager is not judged on that performance, we were much improved. But we didn't get the points.

"We definitely feel we are coming together, you saw that today. We had passion and belief."

Alfie Penfold: It's fair to say my opinion has changed on De Boer. A clear gameplan with players unable to execute it. Zero quality

Andrew Priestley: Exactly why should a manager lose his job if a professional footballer can't score a sitter of a header from two yards out?

Scott: Although Palace haven’t scored, they should take heart from this game, they’ve been a lot, LOT better

  9. Giggs backs Sanches to excitepublished at 15:30 British Summer Time 10 September 2017

When Ryan Giggs says a player is going to be exciting you pay attention.

That is the former Manchester United winger's assessment of Swansea's new signing Renato Sanches.

Portugal midfielder Sanches will make his Swansea debut against Newcastle after completing a shock season-long loan from Bayern Munich.

Giggs tracked Sanches when he was Manchester United assistant manager.

"He is a talent and the Premier League will suit him because he's an aggressive player," Giggs explained.

"He can tackle, he can get forward and he's going to a club that play football the right way, so I think he'll be a success.

"He's a fantastic player and I think he will be one of the most exciting players in the league."

James Tarkowski and Ben Mee - my niche pick as fantasy football captain this week - were both outstanding in that second half I thought. Burnley defended very well, but even so, how did Palace not score?!

An incredible miss at the end by Scott Dann. Sorry to keep dragging it up but, my word.

    Burnley

Burnley goalscorer Chris Wood: "We worked hard, we battled and we luckily came up with the points. I thrive on goals, that's what makes me tick."

Defender James Tarkowski: "It was a good day, I won some headers and blocked some shots. There were a lot of balls coming in and Benteke is a big guy, I'm battered and bruised but we came out on top."

    Burnley 1-0 Crystal Palace

    Trevor Sinclair
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

There is big pressure on Frank de Boer now and that is the first time that has happened to a new manager in the Premier League, losing four on the spin and not scoring a goal, but the performance from his team was quite good.

Nick Pope made an outstanding save, but Burnley were good for the win and dictated a lot of the game and it is not looking good for Palace.

Scott Dann wipes his face, he looks absolutely gutted. It's a miss which will haunt him. Frank de Boer had a handshake and a word in the ear from Sean Dyche.

Palace gave it their all but still come away defeated. They had 23 efforts on goal to Burnley's four.

He will not want to see that again on Match of the Day. Palace have thrown everything into this and they are certainly working for Frank de Boer but that is an absolute sitter, he just needed to hit the target.

If Frank de Boer gets the sack you'd be a hard person not to feel sympathy for the Dutchman. What a chance that was. On this performance he surely deserves to be kept on...

But - it's a results business, as the cliche goes.

It's just not meant to be!

    HOW HAS HE MISSED THAT?!

Dear oh dear oh dear. Scott Dann, look away now. Yohan Cabaye has put a cross on his head, at most two yards out with an open goal. And he heads it wide!

Stephen Ward was close to pressure him but you quite simply have to score that.
