Swansea manager Paul Clement, talking to BBC Match of the Day: "I am not very happy. The margin of the defeat was small and decided by a set play but overall we weren't at the level I expect. I was positive going into the game. Our preparation was good and the atmosphere around the team was good. We were second best in lots of areas. We pushed to the end but never really created anything. Newcastle were better than us today.

"Any system can be undone whether it is man-to-man or zonal. Both have strengths and weaknesses. It worked well for us last season. We have conceded two from corners this season so the details aren't right. We don't need to change how we defend, just go about our defending in a better way.

"It was a missed opportunity. We are a good side but we didn't execute today. At this level you have to do that. We have to move on quickly. We have a hard game at Tottenham next week and it is important we are better."

On Renato Sanches: "He has come to a new club and has new team-mates, a new language, new culture. He did things today that were good and some that weren't good. He is a quality player."

There is still one game to come in this Premier League weekend - Huddersfield travel to West Ham on Monday night.

We shall of course be there to cover that one off. West Ham could climb off the bottom. Huddersfield could go top.

Newcastle United

More from Newcastle assistant manager Francisco de Miguel Moreno.

The rumours were that manager Rafael Benitez wanted to attend the match via a helicopter, having had a hernia operation. Moreno told BBC Sport:

"Yeah he wanted to come and wanted to do everything he could to attend but the weather conditions were not the best. He has been active in the game and kept in touch with us throughout the game.

"All of the staff were involved and have been working very hard.

"After the game, Rafa rang us an congratulated all the team because they did a fantastic job. He said we are now under way."

The Swans have lost their opening two home league games of a season without scoring a goal for just the second time in their history (also 1985-86).

What happened that year? Relegation.

Swansea manager Paul Clement, talking to Sky Sports: "Although the margin of the defeat is small I am more disappointed with our performance. I am not satisfied with the way we played. There was expectation going in to the game but we were second best in combats, duels, first and second balls, tactics, in all aspects. I take responsibility for it. It is a performance I am not proud of.

"It is collective responsibility and I am at the head of that. We had a positive week going in to it and I didn't expect it. We had good training week and the meetings were good. The actual game, what I saw was nothing like I expected.

"We had a couple of good chances. On another day we could have got something out of it. They kept going but overall it wasn't good enough.

"You have to reflect honestly whatever the result, looking at what we could have done better. I think there are a lot of things we could have done better."

Swansea City

Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski tells BBC Sport: "The most frustrating thing is to concede from a set-piece, especially in a game when we are going to try and win it. We got sloppy and got punished.

"It is obvious and clear to see we mark zonally, making two lines to protect the goal. Apart from being in the right position, you have to be aggressive and block the runs. If you don't, then you get punished.

"I don't mind zonal. We have been very successful on it since the manager took over."

Newcastle assistant manager Francisco de Miguel Morenotells Sky Sports: "I feel very happy, very glad for the performance of the players and we were on the way. We have been working very hard during the week and now it is a good moment.

"Rafa has been quite active, speaking with one of the staff and that has worked. Everyone contributed and it was fine.

"We expected them to play with five at the back and we realised it was four but everything was as planned. We tried to control their midfielders and attack down wide.

"Jamaal Lascelles has the spirit of a captain, without doubt. He manages everything so well and involved in all situations.

"We need Rafa back as soon as possible. This week he will join us, probably on Tuesday."

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez should be back at work either on Monday or Tuesday.

I thought Newcastle defended really well, they were unlucky with Joselu and Tammy Abraham was also unlucky for Swansea.

Zonal marking has come up short again. Jamaal Lascelles was half a body above Alfie Mawson.

Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles, talking to BBC Match of the Day: "The boys were excellent today. We knew it would be a tough game. Swansea like to play football but we knew we could get at them and had a game plan.

"I was mad at myself for letting Tammy Abraham get in that position (clear through on the keeper). Fortunately, I was able to get back and slide in before he hit it.

"With zonal marking, I am not a fan. To see them set up like that I thought we'd get chances. Matt Ritchie has a great delivery. It was my job to get on the end of it.

"I have got great boys around me and great support. We are very close and it follows through on to the pitch.

"These are the teams we need to beat. They are a good side but we were the better team on the day. the Premier League is tough and that is why we need to be on it every week."

Should Matt Ritchie have been sent off for a high foot? It is a talking point that will no doubt carry on and on.

Newcastle midfielder Matt Ritchie tells Sky Sports: "These are the games you have to win. The aim is to stay in the league and it is a massive three points."

On challenge with Alfie Mawson: "I had my eye on the ball (like Sadio Mane on Ederson on Saturday) but Mawson came lower than yesterday. I was delighted to see only a yellow card. I looked to the referee and I was lucky."

Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles tells Sky Sports: "They mark zonally and I prefer to go against that. It was down to Matt's delivery and he puts it on a plate each time."

On goalline clearance: "Tammy Abraham should not have been in that position, I got caught ball watching but fortunately got back to clear.

"The manager rang me this morning and told me to make sure the boys were on it. Hopefully he gets well soon and gets back with us.

"We have set a standard now. We will be hard to beat back home but if we play like this every week, we will do well. It is down to us to bring it every week."

Sam Clucas was playing very deep in midfield today but his set-piece delivery late on was really disappointing. Swansea were still very much missing the dead balls of Gylfi Sigurdsson.

It was from a deadball situation, it was a good header, but zonal marking for Swansea, I am not convinced by it.

Swansea were not convincing, they need to get some width in the squad and it looks a bit of imbalance.

Neither team seemed to have done enough to win it but one moment of quality, a good header from a corner, and Newcastle have nicked it.
