Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan - both replaced since half-time - were the only players who created a chance for United while they were on.

Close! Roberto Firmino is played in behind the defence and lifts a chip to the far post, Mohamed Salah is free but the ball drifts over his head!

  4. Postpublished at 69 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

It's very much been the sort of game we expected. Feared.

Georginio Wijnaldum is perhaps lucky not to get booked for a high challenge on Ander Herrera.

Liverpool have seen so much of the ball, but I'm sitting here gong through my notes... two saves in the game by De Gea? Not a lot, is it?

Not for the first time this afternoon Mohamed Salah's first touch and quick feet take him away from attention but he can't keep his shot down and lifts a left-footer into the crowd.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 65 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

Twenty five minutes to go. The last shot on target was in the 43rd minute.

Marcus Rashford is now sent on in place of Anthony Martial.

    Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

Phil Jones has played well so far.

Five clearances, four interceptions and won possession five times for United.

    A rock.

  9. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 63 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

A strangled penalty appeal from the home fans as Philippe Coutinho goes down right on the edge of the area, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera were on him. There was contact but there's not too much in it.

Jesse Lingard comes on for United.

I'd be very surprised if Jose Mournho doesn't turn to Rashford off the bench at any moment. For Liverpool, there aren't actually many attractive options - Sturridge perhaps, or maybe even Oxlade-Chamberlain.

David Thackeray: As a neutral may I say that Atkinson is being fair to both teams and is letting the game flow. Good to watch.

Alec Whitwell: You feel that Man City would ruthlessly expose Liverpool's shaky defence. United look sluggish and unimaginative.

Sammy Nove: United will absorb the pressure, let them wear out then pick them apart with the substitutes in 2nd half.

Sam Wallace: Joel Matip keen to show Phil Jones that he's not the only centre-back around here who can execute a two-yard diving header back-pass.

He almost hit it too well! Yes.

In the Jose Mourinho big-game textbook this is away day perfection so far. They have their first extended spell of possession since the break.

What a chance this is for Liverpool! A brilliant ball in behind the United defence and Can, from just six yards out, actually gets too good a contact on the ball. He just needs to flick it past De Gea, who wouldn't have been able to act.

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    Simon Stone

I am not entirely sure what led to it but Jose Mourinho just shook hands with a Liverpool fan sitting on the front row of the stand about five seats along from where Manchester United's technical area ends.

    The exchange seemed cordial.

Great chance! Joe Gomez picks out a fine dinked cross from wide on the right, Liverpool have committed men forwards and it's Emre Can arriving from deep who ghosts in unmarked. He's only about eight yards out and can't keep his volley down! Into the Kop.

A great run from Coutinho yet again, puts Firmino through but what terrific organisation from the United defence. They all stepped out in unison with arms raised and Firmino was well offside.

Manchester United have barely had a touch since half-time. They've had just 31% of possession since the restart.

Speak of the devils. Philippe Coutinho feeds the ball through to Roberto Firmino, sliced open, but he's offside. And he can't beat David de Gea in goal anyway.

Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho are starting to really make their presence felt in the final third now. If Liverpool make the breakthrough, don't be surprised if it's via their quick passing and play.

This shows their combined touch map. Lively!

I wouldn't say Liverpool are quite knocking on the door but they're advancing down the garden path. Roberto Firmino pulls off a lovely touch on the right wing but his cross is well headed away.
