Simon Hughes: Liverpool need to be a lot more aggressive than this. Even if it means someone taking a booking to get the crowd going.

Paul Lummis: Characteristically weak refereeing from Atkinson - Always favours the home side, regardless of who it is.

Arden O'Breslin: Mohamed Salah: everything but the end product.

AJ Vergette: Save of the season From De Gea so far. No question!

Referee Martin Atkinson is not Anfield's most favourite son at the moment. He didn't book Romelu Lukaku, just gave a soft free-kick against Mohamed Salah and now prevents the hosts from taking a quick free-kick when a counter-attack was on. A decent attack then ends with Salah shooting straight at David de Gea.

That was as good a save as you'll see for my money. The reaction time, the proximity to goal of the strike. Matip didn't just hit it straight at De Gea either, he angled it towards the corner.

    Sensational.

Wow! What a save that was - unbelievable! That was a certain goal...

Firmino went past Matic too easily, passed to Matip, and it was De Gea at the stretch who managed to divert it away with his toe.

Outstanding save, unbelievable reactions. We've seen Peter Schmeichel here today - he'd have been proud of that.

Mohamed Salah rather took that chance off the toes of Philippe Coutinho. Alberto Moreno is then in again on the left but can't find a team-mate, before Romelu Lukaku somehow escapes a booking for wiping out Joe Gomez on halfway.

  6. CLOSE!published at 34 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

The only player for Liverpool who does look like creating anything so far is Mohamed Salah as he skips between two players to find Philippe Coutinho - and that's a corner.

And then WHAT A SAVE THAT IS! Roberto Firmino is onside, cuts it back to Joel Matip about six yards out and he must think he's scored! Good connection, incredible stop by the foot of David de Gea, and Salah then shoots wide!

Jordan Henderson and Emre Can are getting on the ball A LOT in the middle of the park.

So far though they're not creating anything.

James Milner got a predictably terse reception from the Manchester United fans when he went to warm up just now.

As a former Leeds, Manchester City and now Liverpool player, Milner has appeared for all the clubs United have a particular dislike for.

I bet he doesn't repeat what another former player of that trio - Robbie Fowler - did when he was a substitute at Old Trafford once.

Running down the touchline to a torrent of abuse, Fowler simply smiled and held a hand up, fingers wide apart, to signify the number of European Cups Liverpool have won.

Not there! Philippe Coutinho plays a suspect ball on the edge of his own area and succeeds only in playing the ball to Henrikh Mkhitaryan. He shoots instantly but it's well charged down.

  11. CLOSE!published at 29 mins

    Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

At the risk of dredging up a discussion from last season, what are Manchester United fans making of this approach? The pragmatic thing to do away from home? Or dull?As I say that the visitors go close! Ashley Yong's cross is nodded out to the edge of the area and Nemanja Matic clips a good shot just over the top.

Ander Herrera has had an effective start for United in the midfield.

He's won four tackles, won possession four times and made a clearance.

That's as exciting as this game has got.

A touch for Romelu Lukaku! A few in fact but he has to come out to the wing to get them. He holds off a defender well to make room for a cross but his delivery is not good at all. Out for a throw-in. Gives the Kop something to cheer.

Appalling from Mohamed Salah there, who's just thrown himself to the ground on the edge of the area (16 mins). The referee rejected the appeal straight away and if it's that theatrical then Salah should be looking at a yellow card.

It's a dive on the edge of the box, and it's a great example of why this season we've got the chance for retrospective action to be taken. But have we seen the authorities use it yet? No, we haven't. What a surprise.

Summer has returned in Liverpool today.

It's ridiculously warm for the middle of October, not that you would know it from the rather long coat Jose Mourinho is wearing.

Mourinho just had a long chat with fourth official Jon Moss about a decision that went against his team. Jurgen Klopp - no coat, sleeves rolled up, stood and watched.

That's class from Mohamed Salah as his quick feet take him away from a gaggle of grey-shirted guardians and he sets off on goal. He finds Philippe Coutinho on the left but he can't get around Phil Jones. Salah is then close to meeting a cross from the right as the men in red increase the pressure.

  20. 'The hosts are dominating possession'published at 12:49 British Summer Time 14 October 2017

    Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

    Danny Mills
Ex-Man City and England defender at Anfield for 5 live Sport

Manchester United look physically very, very strong. They are making life really difficult in midfield, especially when they snap into challenges.

The hosts are dominating possession at present but up front they need to quicken their play, and try to turn half-chances into genuine openings.

As this game's currently planning out it'll really suit Jose Mourinho's tactical setup, and if you look at the United bench you can see they have so many quality options.
