  1. EFL movementspublished at 19:30 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

There are loads of dealings going on in the EFL this evening.

Rotherham have signed Manny Onariase for an undisclosed fee from Brentford.

Bradford have signed former Bayern Munich keeper Lukas Raeder on a short-term deal.

Plus, Oxford and Oldham are also set to announce some new blood in the next few minutes.

  2. Conte not impressed with Chelseapublished at 19:28 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Chelsea

Ross Mooring of the Chelsea Football Fancast, external:

Yet another transfer window appears to be closing for Chelsea with a rash of much needed deals hopefully to be completed, although last year's much criticised (myself included) signings of David Luiz and Marcos Alonso proved exceptional purchases and allied with Conte's switch to 3-4-3 led to a famous title win.

In spite of spending a gazillion pounds on buys already this summer, including the impressive looking Alvaro Morata, the squad overall is still in need of cover at wing back, central midfield and maybe a third striker too.

Conte himself hasn’t been impressed with the way the club has handled business and with most title rivals improving and Champions League football returning to the Bridge, Chelsea will likely to have to spend over the odds to satisfy the Italian and many supporters too if the club is going to challenge on all fronts.

  3. Why don't clubs get the deals done earlier?published at 19:26 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    BBC Radio 5 live

    Luke Dowling

Former sporting director Watford FC on 5 live

Agents advise you to leave it late on in the transfer window. They are good at what they do and you use them because they have a relationship with the player and the key people at the selling club. You take their advice unless you feel like you're not getting anywhere with them in which case you go straight to the club. If they're confident the deal will happen, then it's usually the case that it's left to the last couple of days.

Bad news for fans of silky number 10s. Stoke forward Bojan has left the building once more.

Manchester City fans react to spending in the summer transfer window

"It's got to stop somewhere," says one Manchester City fan when asked about the ever-escalating fees that top clubs are playing.

But then we thought that when Blackburn spent £5m on Chris Sutton back in 1994.

Ross Barkley is injured for the next few months. Chelsea had a bid rejected for him this week - I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed at Everton until January at least.

  7. What next for Ross Barkley?published at 19:20 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Charlie Adam
Stoke City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live

Does Ross Barkley take the risk of staying at Everton and not playing? I think he's in the driving seat to let his contract run down and go on a free next summer. The big clubs will still have him next year.

  8. Gayle sale depends on recruitmentpublished at 19:19 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Dwight GayleImage source, PA

Newcastle’s top scorer last season, Dwight Gayle, could still leave the club - but they will only sanction a sale if they can find another striker.

BBC Newcastle understands Fulham’s offer of £15m for Gayle remains on the table but the Magpies want closer to £20m.

Arsenal’s Lucas Perez has been one of Rafa Benitez’s top targets this summer but he has now moved elsewhere.

Newcastle have enquired about the availability of Southampton left back Matt Targett, and they also hope to complete a loan deal for Chelsea’s Kenedy - but that transfer seems dependent on Blues boss Antonio Conte making some more signings.

Out-of-favour midfielder Jack Colback won’t be joining Wolves on loan, while there has been no serious interest in goalkeeper Tim Krul.

  9. Arsenal right to keep Sanchez?published at 19:17 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    BBC Radio 5 live

Charlie Adam: Arsenal need Alexis Sanchez more than they need the £60 million. Without him, they’ve no chance of getting in the Champions League this season. He won’t sulk. Come 1st September, he’ll knuckle down and give his all for the team.

Andy Townsend: Arsenal are in a mess. I would let him go. Sanchez's body language in the Liverpool game was really poor. He's had enough and his mind is already elsewhere. I don't think he'll be able to pick it up quite as quick.

  10. 'Why have City left it so late?'published at 19:16 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Rory Smith
Chief Soccer Correspondent for The New York Times on 5 live

There is a necessary lateness to a lot of transfer business. Because of the deadline clubs have a target and the system incentivises teams to leave it late.

There is a flurry of late deals every year but i don't understand clubs who leave business which could have been done earlier until now. Why have City only just gone in for Alexis Sanchez now? Guardiola has always liked him.

  12. Chelsea unable to seal the dealpublished at 19:13 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

After missing out on Romelu Lukaku, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and now, it seems, Fernando Llorente this transfer window, Chelsea must be sick of their pockets being picked. What is happening in the Chelsea boardroom?

  13. Worst performers of the window?published at 19:11 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Kevin Kilbane
    Former Republic of Ireland winger

    LacazetteImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal managed to get Alexandre Lacazette but have not backed that up and if anything they are going backwards; there is this negative feel around the place, whereas at the start of the window there was so much optimism.

You thought maybe three or four names would see them strengthen enough to even mount a title challenge - because this is a year they could have really thrown themselves at the Premier League.

But they still haven't sorted out that defensive midfield position, and Arsene Wenger and the club's board have just let the uncertainty around Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil drift.

That feeling has clearly been filtering through to performances on the pitch, which then feeds negativity from supporters. It's not a great way to start the season. Instead, now, you're thinking they might fall out of the top six.

From a business point of view it doesn't make a lot of sense to turn down £60m and keep hold of Sanchez just for one more season, but where are they without him? It just doesn't seem to match with the policies you see at a lot of other Premier League clubs.

  14. Evans staying?published at 19:10 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

I'm told that Jonny Evans is training with Northern Ireland as we speak, so it looks very much like he is staying with West Brom.

  15. We really needed that extra strikerpublished at 19:08 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

Manchester City fans may be disappointed at the breakdown of Alexis Sanchez's move to the Etihad but do they really need him? Is a squad which already boasts the talents of Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne, Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling crying out for the skills of the Chilean forward?

  16. Which Alexis will we get?published at 19:07 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Arsenal

Arsenal Supporters' Trust board member Akhil Vyas:

Seems the Thomas Lemar deal is dead which means we keep Alexis Sanchez. Now the question is which Alexis will we get for a season? I hope he regains his focus and gives it his all (which he tends too when on a pitch) for the season at least.

Very underwhelming end to the window but at the very worst, if we were not going to bring anyone in, we had to keep Alexis.

  20. A long summer comes down to a few short hourspublished at 19:01 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    NeymarImage source, EPA

Like a student with an end-of-term essay, clubs are trying to cram a couple of month's work into a few hours.

The transfer window officially opened on 1 July.

Full marks to early birds Southampton, who bought Polish defender Jan Bednarek on 1 July and shipped out striker Jay Rodriguez to West Brom on 2 July.

    Smart work.

The most expensive Premier League bit of business so far? Romelu Lukaku's £75m, possibly rising to £90m, switch from Everton to Manchester United.

Of course that is back-of-the-sofa shrapnel compared to Paris St Germain's stonking FFP-busting £198m outlay to trigger Neymar's release clause at Barcelona.
