If anyone's wondering what the addition of Kylian Mbappe means to PSG's roster, I'd suggest that Julian Draxler and Hatem Ben Arfa may be available at the right price...

  5. 'Players are not to blame for prices'published at 18:53 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

Footballers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose except several million quid in dodgy Mediterranean golf developments.

Trevor Sinclair says that it is no use blaming the players themselves for rampant inflation in the transfer market. Instead it simply reflects the money coming into the game from sponsors, broadcasters and mega-loaded club owners.

  9. What's it like for a chairman on deadline day?published at 18:48 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed all to BBC Sport:

"Keeping a player that’s highly coveted by clubs higher up or who have already got into the player is a very difficult scenario come deadline day. We had the Lee Tomlin/Celtic issue which derailed our start to the season a few years ago..nightmare.

"I have had players personally call me to talk about their family and what it means to them long term (Ryan Bennett when we sold him to Norwich on deadline day years ago) to accept bids whilst at same time worrying about my club, the fan base, our momentum and lack of time to have a replacement in mind. So, we always ensure we do a bit of work prior to a window to line up our two possible replacements for that one player we feel may leave the club.

"Being in League One makes it very difficult to turn bids down of high amounts and from bigger clubs so it’s a fine balancing act. During this summer, I made a deal with the players that we would all ignore the transfer window deadline madness and not get heads turned as promotion for the club was all that matters.

"They all bought into it hence our lack of activity in this window even though we have many players coveted by clubs from above. I have no doubt January will be even crazier but I’m just glad we have four plus months before it all starts again. Our biggest goal today was keeping the squad together and with six hours to go it's nearly mission accomplished!"

Gary Gardner's proposed loan move from Aston Villa to Barnsley has been held up by various wrangles but still might happen tonight. Sunderland came in for Tommy Elphick but Villa couldn't agree either a loan or transfer deal.

There are no plans by Villa to sign any players tonight.

The wording in the PSG announcement is key, they can’t officially say that Kylian Mbappe's move from Monaco is a loan which will become a permanent deal because if they did then the transfer fee would go on this year’s accounts (and give them a big Financial Fair Play problem).

So they’ve basically said there is an “option” on bringing him in permanently, but they won’t say “the loan will become permanent” because if they did then they’d be in FFP bother.

Despite that, it’s clear that the permanent deal has been done in all but name, and I suspect it may yet come under Uefa scrutiny.
