  3. Mangala ready for Palace?published at 16:07 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

The initial view from the north-west was that Crystal Palace's £23m offer for Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala might have been acceptable but that the player himself had doubts.

It seems, with time ticking on and attractive alternatives not presenting themselves, Mangala has become more receptive to the idea, to the point where the deal is now likely to go through.

Whether that has an impact on Jonny Evans' situation remains to be seen.

Colchester have added forward Sanmi Odelusi on a free transfer.

  5. The Ox can thrive at Anfieldpublished at 16:03 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Liverpool

    Jack Lusby, writer for thisisanfield.com:

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s signing has certainly been a divisive one for Liverpool supporters in a transfer window where Thomas Lemar has been linked and uncertainty has endured over Philippe Coutinho’s future, but I think he’s a great addition.

While he clearly struggled to nail down a regular position under Arsene Wenger, and had his fair share of injuries while in north London, the same could be said of many Arsenal players in recent years.

He’s moved to Merseyside for a fresh start, and the opportunity to operate in his favoured role under a manager renowned for his sensitive approach to development - and I think he’ll thrive.

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s versatility is useful, but if he has been earmarked for a regular berth in midfield - alongside, say, Emre Can and Jordan Henderson - his energy, technical quality and athleticism will be invaluable, as will his ability to transition quickly.

He’s an intelligent guy who, at 24, has major scope for development at Anfield, and I feel Jurgen Klopp is the right manager to nurture the potential that Wenger failed to fully tap into.

  10. Chalobah a huge capture for Hornetspublished at 15:50 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Watford

Matt Rowson from the BHaPPY Watford blog:

Time will tell how successful Watford’s latest overhaul has been, but the mood at the moment is hugely positive. Our midfield never quite clicked last season but the remodelled heart of the team looks tremendous.

Coverage of Nathaniel Chalobah’s transfer focused on Chelsea’s decision to sell him, but he’s a huge capture for the Hornets. He was the metronome of our team five years ago in the Championship as a 17-year-old and already his partnership with the extraordinary Abdoulaye Doucoure at the base of the midfield looks formidable.

In front of them Tom Cleverley, signed permanently from Everton, is thriving in an advanced role while Will Hughes provides another option. As an aside, that we can look at signing Will Hughes from Derby as just another (good) signing shows how much things have changed.

Spending a reported £18m on Andre Gray also falls into that category; his mobility will be key to Marco Silva’s team, and he has added some much needed pace to our forward line. The same goes for Richarlison, a Brazilian winger with all the tricks you’d hope but who is strong in the air and holds the ball up too. What’s not to like?

Add Andre Carrillo, on-loan with an option to buy and whose 40-odd minutes against Brighton showcased brutal acceleration, and Kiko Femenía, an attacking Spanish right-back and also no slouch, and the “injection of pace” box is properly ticked.

So what’s still missing? Our need for competition at left back is most urgent; cover and a competition for Heurelho Gomes also seems to be a priority, and if news of Stefano Okaka’s understandable impatience at his lack of game time are well-founded then attacking re-enforcement might be needed also. A busy summer probably hasn’t finished yet, but lots out of 10 so far.
