  2. Mangala Palace deal 'unlikely'published at 08:18 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

No sooner had the news of Palace's bid for Eliaquim Mangala come into the public domain than I was told it was unlikely to happen.

There has been no word from Manchester City as to why that would be the case.

Palace obviously want the player and £23m would seem to be an acceptable price, so maybe it is Mangala who is not keen.

Mind you, if it is the only option at 6pm, he might start thinking differently.

It will be a hectic day on Merseyside with both Everton and Liverpool expecting to do some very significant late business.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman will be hoping his board deliver the high-quality striker he has been demanding - but time and options appear to be running out to secure what is arguably the most important deal of the summer following the departure of Romelu Lukaku.

Koeman also wants a central defender and has been linked with former Arsenal start Thomas Vermaelen, whose spell at Barcelona has been wrecked by injury.

Everton will also try to open the exit door to misfit striker Oumar Niasse, who has interested Brighton and Watford.

The biggest movers of the day could be Liverpool, who will sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal and will surely await one last opening to sign their top summer target, Southampton's Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool also retain an interest in Monaco's Thomas Lemar (pictured) on what could be a pivotal day for manager Jurgen Klopp.

And Philippe Coutinho? Well, Barcelona continue to make the noises they have made for the last month - but Liverpool are simply refusing to sell. They have not budged one inch.

So it could be a day to fasten the seat belts on Merseyside.

  6. More interest in Mangala, Mustafi staying at Arsenalpublished at 08:07 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

    David Ornstein
    BBC Sport

Eliaquim Mangala, who is the subject of a bid from Crystal Palace, is also a target of West Bromwich Albion, who will only let Jonny Evans leave if they have a replacement, and Mangala is their preferred candidate.

With City looking to sign Evans and the Northern Ireland defender keen to move to the Etihad Stadium, that deal would appear straight forward.

However, it is complicated by Mangala indicating he would prefer a move to Inter Milan and the likelihood of that has increased since Inter's move for Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi broke down.

Mustafi's representatives also held talks with Juventus, only for the Italians to sign his Germany team-mate Benedikt Howedes on loan from Schalke.

Mustafi will therefore stay at Arsenal - a situation that suits neither him nor them - and that means the Gunners dropping their own interest in Evans, who is also a target for Leicester City.

Meanwhile, aside from the unchanged Alexis Sanchez situation, the only significant departure from Arsenal is set to see striker Lucas Perez leave just a year after joining from Deportivo la Coruna.

  9. Palace bid for Mangalapublished at 07:55 British Summer Time 31 August 2017
    Breaking

    David Ornstein
    BBC Sport

Late last night, Crystal Palace submitted a bid in the region of £23m for Manchester City centre-back Eliaquim Mangala.

Palace are optimistic City will accept the offer as they seek an alternative option to Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho.

Sakho was Palace's first choice and the France international is keen to return to Selhurst Park, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell in the second half of last season.

But despite Palace improving their offer and Sakho seemingly surplus to requirements at Liverpool, the Anfield club seem unwilling to lower their asking price of £30m.

  12. Riyad Mahrez is in Paris - but then where?published at 07:50 British Summer Time 31 August 2017

A blurry picture has emerged on social media of Riyad Mahrez in Paris awaiting his next move.

A number of clubs have been suggested as his eventual destination, including Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.

It is possible even Mahrez himself doesn't know where he is going yet. But it is a lot easier - and quicker - to get there from Paris than Zambia, where he was due to be going ahead of Algeria's World Cup qualifier on Saturday.
