To add to the confusion at that last Southampton corner, it looks as though Salomon Rondon may have handled the ball in the area. It was completely unintentional and probably the right decision to to give a pen but still a risky moment for the Baggies.

The visitors have a good chance now though. Nacer Chadli is lining up a free-kick from 30 yards. He scored from one of these last week...

    Crikey.

For once West Brom look shaky defending a corner and the ball lands in the six yard box. It seemed inevitable someone in red and white would stick the ball in the back of the net but Oriol Romeu shoots wide on the spin.

Tony Pulis would have exploded had that gone in.

Southampton are turning the screw. Their best move of the match ends with Ryan Bertrand skipping inside his man on the left side of the box and squaring to Dusan Tadic.

The Serbian gets his shot away but it goes straight at Ben Foster in the West Brom goal.

  4. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 18 mins

    Southampton 0-0 West Brom

    So close!

It's the left-footed Ryan Bertrand who takes the free-kick and his curling effort takes a clip off the wall on the way through and then clatters back off the post.

Gasps from the home fans. Ben Foster was well beaten.

Now then. Southampton haven't really managed to find that key pass around the edge of the box but now this is an excellent opportunity.

Jake Livermore commits a clumsy foul about 25 yards out, pretty centrally. This is an almost perfect position for a free-kick...

More possession from Southampton but where is the end product?

Cedric Soares is almost played in down the right but the ball is cut out and then Mario Lemina blasts over.

That Gareth Barry effort is still the closest we have come.

And typically after the big build-up... it leads to nothing.

The ball sails over Jay Rodriguez's head at the back post.

Now here is a chance for West Brom. A corner.

Lemina, a £18.1m summer signing from Juventus, is now seeing plenty of the ball in these opening 10 minutes.

He doesn't seem afraid to carry the ball and drive forward but as yet can't find that killer pass.

Unsurprisingly against a Tony Pulis side, the Saints have had over 60% of the possession so so far.

    Southampton 0-0 West Brom

The first corner of the game goes Southampton's way but it ends without any threat on goal as Cedric Soares heads over.

Mario Lemina - a player I am looking forward to watching today - gets his foot on the ball in the Saints midfield for the first time a few moments later.

He tries to chip the ball over to Manolo Gabbiadini but it skips off the greasy turf and out for a goal kick.

    Southampton 0-0 West Brom

That encourgaing Southampton start has resulted in the first strangled cries of "Oh when the Saints..." from the home fans.

They're silenced immediately though as Gareth Barry has a shot from range that hits the side netting.

I think a few thought that was in.

    Southampton 0-0 West Brom

West Brom look to be playing 4-5-1 early on with Salomon Rondon the loan striker.

The visitors allow the Southampton defence to pass the ball around the back with little pressure.

Eventually the Saints work the ball into a wide position and Dusan Tadic is able to swing the ball in from the left but it's comfortably cleared.

    And away we go.

Tony Pulis is already prowling the technical area, Mauricio Pellegrino is arms folded in his seat.

    Let's play.

St Mary's roars. The players are out onto the pitch.

Can one of these teams end their barren spells or will they cancel each other out for a draw?

The teams are in the tunnel.

Shane Long and Jay Rodriguez look to be having a lovely chat before kick-off.

They were teammates of course before Rodriguez moved from the south coast to the Baggies.

Can the real Manolo Gabbiadini please stand up.

One month a prolific poacher, the next a striker who has left his shooting boots on the bus.

The Italian started his career on the south coast with four goals in his first three matches but then scored just once in his following 15 matches.

He ended that with a double last week so what can we expect today?

Poor run or not St Mary's looks to be filling up nicely with 10 minutes to go until kick-off.

31,437 watched Southampton's draw against Newcastle last week. Will they keep that up if results continue to falter?

What's the opposite of the proverbial home ground fortress?

Whatever it is, St Mary's is it.

Southampton have won just one of their last 10 at home in the Premier League and have failed to score in eight of those although last week was an improvement with a 2-2 draw against Newcastle.

"It is a fact we are not getting really good results [at home], and not just from this season," manager Mauricio Pellegrino said.

"Some players who have more time here than me can feel this anxiety, but it is something which is normal.
