For many Newcastle fans a pint in The Strawberry remains a ritual before heading into St James’ Park. For fans gathering in there, the hope will be for an open, entertaining game of football. Having said that, the minimum expectation will be three points.

Judging on the season so far there might not be many goals at St Mary's on Saturday, but an intriguing encounter is in store between these evenly matched sides.

Burnley are enjoying a club record start to a Premier League campaign, and their best in the top flight since the 1973-74 season.

However, joy for Clarets' fans has been tempered somewhat by the ongoing speculation linking manager Sean Dyche with the Everton job.

Southampton have been solid but unspectacular under Mauricio Pellegrino. Their struggles in front of goal show no signs of abating, but Burnley old boy Charlie Austin has a great scoring record against his former club.

Sean Dyche keeps getting linked with all sports of jobs, and you can bet there will be managerial changes during the upcoming international break.

But it's my understanding actually that Sam Allardyce has edged ahead of Dyche in the running for the Everton job. And, interestingly, Sam Allardyce is a guest of Match of the Day tonight...

    Swansea v Brighton (15:00 GMT)

    Conor McNamara
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

These two clubs have come a long way since their last league meeting nine years ago, when both were in the third tier.

Having stayed clear of relegation in their six seasons since promotion, Swansea are a blueprint for what Brighton can achieve.

However, this could be Swansea's trickiest campaign yet, with four defeats in their last five league games. Only goal difference keeps them above the bottom three.

Brighton appeared to struggle with the step up when losing three of their first five games. Just one defeat in the subsequent five shows that Chris Hughton's side are finding their feet.

The draw with Southampton moved Brighton up to 12th place in the table, their highest position, external since 1982.

Interesting thoughts from the Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles in today’s programme. He writes of his team-mates: “We’re just waiting for someone to take the game by two hands and put the ball in the back of the net.” Could it be he is making a point to the forward thinking players in his side?

The statue of Southampton legend Ted Bates at the front of the St. Mary’s Stadium - just think, if they’d built a cheap, no-frills hotel at the ground they could have called it the Bates Motel.

But on to more serious matters like 10th vs seventh in the Premier League with both teams sitting in the top half of the table despite each scoring just nine goals in 10 games.

That tells you everything about two excellent defences we’ll have on show today and I think the O’Neills, Michael and Martin, might be watching this one a little anxiously with the World Cup play-offs around the corner and Steven Davis, Shane Long, Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady probably all involved today.

Huddersfield's glorious win over Manchester United will mean nothing if they lose home games like this - and if they play as badly as they did at Liverpool, they will lose.

Tony Pulis knows exactly the importance of victories against lowly opposition. That's why he has never been relegated.

For all of David Wagner's very obvious charisma, his side lacks charm in front of goal. Just three scored in nine games and seven blanks in that time is relegation form.

That may sound harsh. But they have to learn lessons quickly.

It was still summer when the Baggies last won in the league - eight games ago! But recent performances have deserved better. They are craggy, wily and could get the job done here.
