Both teams come here today aiming for three Premier League wins in a row.

With a third of the season gone Watford are eighth. I spoke to Marco Silva yesterday and asked him whether he can take Watford into a European competition come May.

He said: “You know what our aim is, you know what is our goal. Since the first day it’s to remain in the Premier League. We need to keep going. The moment we achieve 40 points I can talk about different situations.”

Watford’s 21-point tally from 13 games is their joint top-flight record at this stage of a season, tied with their best-ever league campaign; when they finished second in the 1982-83 season.

The last competitive game at Filbert Street was a Leicester win against Tottenham. Leicester haven't been able to beat Spurs at home in the league since.

The most recent meeting, in May, was Leicester's heaviest Premier League home defeat.

Back then, when Harry Kane was scoring four in a 6-1 drubbing, who would have thought that Tottenham would be 13 points off the pace 13 games into the new campaign?

With just one win in their last five domestic games, even Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that Spurs' title hopes look remote.

England are in action for the final time this year as they take on Kazakhstan in chilly Colchester.

Wales ensured they will sign off 2017 top of the standings after beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-0 earlier today but England will be determined to ensure they remain firmly in touch heading into 2018.

    Chris Hughton's programme notes

The rivalry between Brighton and Crystal Palace might be a little perplexing to those outside of the area but you only need to be around the Amex Stadium this evening to sense the anticipation. Simply put, these two really aren't fond of one another.

Police presence is far greater than usual and even the Brighton manager Chris Hughton has used his programme notes to tell his own coaching staff and players that 'emotions can't get in the way' tonight."

Watford could be forgiven for scratching their heads at the Football Association's disciplinary processes.

Hornets skipper Troy Deeney is available for tonight's game against Manchester United after serving a three-match ban for violent conduct, a charge being brought against him even though he was booked for his part in the melee that erupted at the end of his side's game against Stoke last month.

United striker Romelu Lukaku can also play after three former referees looked at his clash with Brighton's Gaetan Bong at Old Trafford on Saturday and could not reach a unanimous verdict on whether what seemed to be a kick warranted a red card.

The Palace-Brighton rivalry is not an obvious one to the outside world, but there must be plenty of fans who have fallen out for reasons other than geography.

In my younger days we (Northampton) used to sing a lot of songs about Barnet which stemmed back to one particular match and the actions of a Mr. B. Fry, as far as I recall.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson: "Every club has its classic derbies, but this is regarded as the most important for Palace fans.

"We've got to be prepared we leave nothing on the pitch at the end of the game. That doesn't change from one game to the next.

"Winning away from home would be good, we haven't even taken a point away from home.

"That doesn't concern me as such because we aren't playing and working now as we were at the start of the season - we've improved."

The Premier League's expanding global audience may be surprised to learn that this is a derby fixture, but events - as much as geography - have often put these two clubs at loggerheads.

Palace arrive at the Amex, scene of a dramatic play-off win four years ago, already in Premier League survival mode.

The hosts have built a good start on solid home foundations. The goals of Glenn Murray have proved crucial for Chris Hughton's side too.

Given his history, external with both clubs, you wouldn't bet against him being the key man again. It should be a raucous night on the south coast.

Sam Allardyce is the leading contender for the Everton manager's job.

The Premier League club's search for a new boss has taken on fresh urgency after Sunday's 4-1 loss at Southampton.

Caretaker boss David Unsworth told the media on Monday that the board were in "ongoing" talks with a "few" managers.

Asked about Allardyce, Unsworth said: "He's a top manager but it would be wrong to talk about individuals. I've seen the names banded about, all of them are top managers."

Gary Megson says the fact that he's writing tonight's programme notes means it's a sad time for him personally as Tony Pulis is no longer here.

Despite all of the speculation, I'm led to believe someone who won't be here tonight is Alan Pardew.

The fans I've spoken to here have mixed views about Pardew being the front runner, the general gist being they're not bowled over but he's probably the best option they could realistically hope for.

Palace manager Hodgson says his side's "fighting sprit" led to them fighting back from behind to score a 92nd-minute winner against Stoke at the weekend.

There are 45 miles between Brighton and Crystal Palace - so why the rivalry? Well, it originates back to the 1970s when the two teams were managed by Alan Mullery and Terry Venables. The pair had been team-mates at Tottenham but were far from the best of friends; Venables was said to be jealous of Mullery being captain, fans' favourite and dressing room leader.

In the 1976-77 season the teams met each other five times in a series of FA Cup replays. Familiarity bred contempt and a bitter war of words followed in the press. In the final match - won by Palace - Mullery claims to have a cup of boiling coffee thrown over him by a Palace supporter as he remonstrated with controversial refereeing decisions. He responded by throwing a handful of change at the Palace and shouting "That's all your worth!"

Tensions grew on the terraces at that time as well. A match at the Goldstone Ground was marred by smoke bombs as well as clashes in the ground and on the streets of Brighton. That ill-feeling continued into the 1980s and Palace one second-tier meeting in 1989 saw Palace awarded five penalties in one game against Brighton.
