Cesc Fabregas, speaking to Sky Sports about the importance of keeping the pressure on leaders Manchester City: "The gap is eight points now, and there's still a long way to go so that's why we have to keep getting closer and closer and hope they slip up. They are there because they deserve it. Our job is to keep winning.

"We managed to come back well and at the end it was a good win. We've slightly changed formation and playing with three midfielders allows me [to be] a little bit higher up the pitch, I can be closer to Eden."

  4. 'Hazard can make the difference'published at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

    Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, speaking to Sky Sports: "We made mistakes against good players, with the quality they have, they punish you. We were in the game and you never know what can happen at one each, 2-1. A top side played against a team that was giving everything.

"We knew him [Hazard] really well, it's not just a free role. He has good movements. You cannot control everyone. When he received the ball he can make the difference. We were doing quite well for a while but mistakes made the difference."

On Newcastle's run of six games without a win: "We are in the Premier League, simple, [that] is the problem. We try to do our best now and see what happens in January."

  5. 'We did well after only two days' rest'published at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

    Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle

Chelsea head coach Antonio Conte, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think our start wasn't good enough. After going 1-0 down, we started to play with good intensity and good football. Our start was a bit slow.

"We did well after only two days' rest. It was a solid performance despite the goal. We showed good motivation and good intensity. I made rotations in the game and the response of my players was positive.

"I think that today, to play and win after two days of rest means a lot. Newcastle had the advantage with one day more of rest."

On Hazard's penalty: "The most important thing is to score. The player can decide to shoot in every way, but the important thing is to score, otherwise it can make me a bit angry."

  6. 'The chip annoyed me, but it's a great penalty'published at 14:40 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

    Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think the game plan was to stay in the game as long as we could. At half time, when we were 2-1 down, we wanted to get to 80 minuets and nick something. They're a good side though. We keep battling on.

"The chip [from Hazard's penalty] annoyed me a little bit. I'd be lying if I said it didn't, but it's a great penalty.

"There are positives. We've gone to Manchester United and Chelsea and done all right in spells but you get punished at this level. We have to keep improving."

  7. 'It was a good penalty'published at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

    Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle

    Chelsea

Chelsea forward Eden Hazard, asked by Sky Sports if there was an element of luck to his first goal: "I don't think so. The most important thing is to put the ball in the net so I just shoot. I try, I try [to do it on purpose].

"It's not a problem for me [to not score a hat-trick]. We won the game; that's the most important thing. We play on Tuesday so a rest is sometimes good, when I score two I want to score a hat-trick but the other boys score, no problem.

On his cheeky penalty, Hazard said: "When I take the ball in my hands, instinct. I just want to do this. I just want the goalkeeper to move, if he doesn't move, I'm in trouble. He moved, the ball is in the middle, It was a good penalty."

  9. A touch of differencepublished at 14:28 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2017

    Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle

Newcastle didn't threaten too often today, despite scoring first. The only managed eight touches in Chelsea's penalty area (see the map on the right). Chelsea (on the left) had far more of the ball in Newcastle's area.

Eden Hazard's ability in terms of creating chances, taking players on, he's making the game look very easy at the moment. He was the difference. Chelsea went in at half time with the lead and Newcastle didn't have the energy or creativity to do anything about it.

'Blue Is The Colour' blares out over the public address system as the fans applaud. There will be bigger tests to come for Chelsea, but all they can do for now is keep winning and wait for those above them to slip.

    Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle

It's all got a bit frayed at the Chelsea end in the closing minutes. Thibaut Courtois almost gets into a muddle with Antonio Rudiger following a Victor Moses back pass that wasn't best advised. No harm done, though.

    Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle

Newcastle, having won one corner in the first 89 minutes, have now won three in no time. Again Ritchie delivers, but this time Thibaut Courtois, in the Chelsea goal, plucks the ball out of the air.

Then Jonjo Shelvey finds space 30 yards out and thinks: "If Wayne Rooney can score from 70 yards, surely I've got a chance from here?" Sadly for him, football reality does not wirk that way. The ball sails into the Shed End.

  15. Postpublished at 89 mins

    Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle

Bit of a late flurry from Newcastle, who have nothing to lose now but their dignity and their goal difference. Dwight Gayle's shot is deflected behind for a corner, and Matt Ritchie's first delivery wins a second chance. Ciaran Clark meets the second corner with a firm header, but it's well off-target.

Danny Drinkwater, with Rob Millward's praise no doubt ringing in his ears, almost has a sight of goal as he greets N'Golo Kante's fine lofted pass with a neat first touch, but Matt Ritchie times the challenge well and nips the ball away before the Chelsea midfielder can think about shooting.

Rob Millward: Been so impressed with Drinkwater today... Him and Kante hopefully can bring back their partnership now... Bakayoko could be finished before he's even started

Kris Jefferson: This may seem like a harsh question, but is Rafa really as good a manager as he used to be? Failure at Inter Milan and Real Madrid and honestly this Newcastle team barely seems better than the one relegated 2 years ago....

    Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle

I think Newcastle will be glad to get this game done now. Marcos Alonso causes problems for them twice in quick succession - first with a cross that Victor Moses cannot direct towards goal on the far post, and then with an angled drive that Karl Darlow beats out.

Newcastle make their final change; DeAndre Yedlin is on for Mikel Merino.

  20. Postpublished at 80 mins

    Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle

A standing ovation for Hazard as he departs. Two other Chelsea changes to tell you about; Cesc Fabregas is replaced by Tiemoue Bakayoko, and Gary Cahill is on for Andreas Christensen.

With the match won, head coach Antonio Conte understandably wants to keep players as fresh as he can for Tuesday's Champions League home meeting with Atletico Madrid.
