Chelsea had two penalty shouts, Andreas Christensen hit the post, that goal was coming.

Eden Hazard has been terrific and Chelsea look dangerous every time they go forward.

    Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle

Ah, Danny, you've reminded me of an incident circa 2003 in another Newcastle game, against Birmingham, when referee Matt Messias signalled a foul and, in doing so, accidentally laid out Robbie Savage with his elbow. Amid the ensuing mirth (Savage was fine, by the way), Alan Shearer picked up the red card and waved it at the referee.

They just collided, it's a yellow card for the referee. Would he have got an assist if Newcastle had gone on to score?

    Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle

Referee Kevin Friend frustrates Chelsea as he bowls into Cesc Fabregas, sending the Chelsea midfielder to the turf. Friend would argue, no doubt, that the collision was accidental. And also that you can't give a free-kick for a foul by the referee.

    Chelsea 1-1 Newcastle

This stat just in from Opta: Eden Hazard has been directly involved in seven goals in his eight Premier League appearances against Newcastle (five goals, two assists).

What a finish that was. That's actually his most difficult chance of the day. He's drilled it low into the ground and it's bounced over the goalkeeper. Great finish and a deserved equalizer.

GOAL - Chelsea 1-1 Newcastlepublished at 20 mins

    Eden Hazard

Chelsea were not behind for long. Seconds after Andreas Christensen hits the post, Eden Hazard finds the net.

It's a diagonal ball from the right by Cesar Azpilicueta that causes problems for the visitors, and Florian Lejeune on the stretch can only clear straight to Hazard, who drives his shot past Karl Darlow. Hazard's seventh of the season, and the home side are deservedly level.

    Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle

A bit of a nervy moment for the Newcastle defence as Alvaro Morata, totally unmarked and seemingly offside, leaps for Antonio Rudiger's long ball and collides with goalkeeper Karl Darlow. Not entirely sure what Darlow is trying to do as he jumps for the ball, but the referee gives neither offside nor a foul by the keeper, and everybody feels aggrieved.

    Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle

Andreas Christensen heads well over from a Cesc Fabregas corner as Chelsea try to respond.

Then Eden Hazard is played clear by Cesc Fabregas' through ball, and Karl Darlow, in his luminous orange shirt, advances quickly to block. Good response from the home side. Very much game on.

Gayle's goal at Old Trafford was the prelude to a 4-1 Newcastle defeat. Can they make a better go of it today?

    Dwight Gayle

Just as they did at Manchester United two weeks ago, Newcastle have surprisingly scored first. Dwight Gayle, who got the goal at Old Trafford, wins a header, and Jacob Murphy then causes panic in the Chelsea defence - with the ball running loose off Marcos Alonso. Murphy is denied as Thibuat Courtois dives at his feet, but Gayle sweeps in the loose ball for his second goal of the season.

Peter Collins: Pretty sure that last season Chelsea had one of the kindest Christmas fixture lists in terms of travelling. And again this season. Perhaps Conte is onto something - his team are being singled out for favouritism

Half an opening for Newcastle. Ayoze Perez jinks into the Chelsea area, like a man trying to pick his way through a crowd outside a nightclub. He lays off to Mikel Merino, whose tame shot is gathered easily by Thiabut Courtois.

At the other end, the ever-alert Alvaro Morata, Chelsea's top scorer, hits a snapshot over from a tight angle.

Cesar Azpilicueta, back in the Chelsea team after a rare rest in midweek, hits a long diagonal ball that is gathered easily by Karl Darlow, making only his second Premier League appearance in the Newcastle goal. Darlow, clad all in orange, is not difficult to pick out.

If that had have got through to Hazard to tap it in, that would have been goal of the season. An unbelievable footballer.

Cesc Fabregas' lovely touch plays Danny Drinkwater down the left - his cut-back is cleared by Ciaran Clark, and there's then a flurry of home pressure as Newcastle struggle to halt the tide. They just about manage to do so, though. The first scare for the visitors is ridden out.

Javier Manquillo gets an early rap across the shin from Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater. No hard feelings, though, it was just mistimed.

The travelling Newcastle fans are singing manager Rafa Benitez's name. He was booed by the home fans before the start - he was not a popular manager during his seven months at Stamford Bridger, as we established earlier.

    Chelsea 0-0 Newcastle

Early touch for Thibaut Courtois, the Chelsea goalkeeper receiving a rather sharp back pass from Antonio Rudiger. Courtois switches feet neatly and the danger passes. Newcastle quick to close down Chelsea players in possession in the opening minutes.
