    Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle

Newcastle need a lift, having gathered just one point from five matches. Can they find a way back in? Chelsea are halfway to a fifth win from six games in all competitions.

Victor Moses makes an early break down the right after Andreas Christensen's positive run out of defence. The low ball in towards the waiting Alvaro Morata is put behind by Chancel Mbemba. Fine piece of defending that; it saved Newcastle the loss of a third goal.

Great game for Chelsea; pleased with the southern glory hunters! Mike Ashley is a good guy....as is Dennis Wise. C’mon Chelsea.

    Calum

This is getting repetitive. Fans and pundits alike absolutely baffled by today’s team selection. No doubt Shelvey and Mitro will be brought on 10 minutes before the end when it’s too late for them to salvage even a point.

    Swift

Have the PL referees taken a disliking for Morata? Stonewall penalty early on and then a cynical foul right at the end of the half against him.. nothing given yet again!

Ari Sudil Puchon Bhu: I'm a Chelsea fan and I think Rafa did all right, won us the Europa League at the end of the day and got us 3rd in the league and back in the UCL. Would you rather have us end that season trophyless?

Richard Tipper: Benitez doesn't trust Shelvey to be disciplined in his play or to stay on the pitch, it's as simple as that

Lewis Wilson: I cant believe that Shelvey doesn't start in this Newcastle team. Every time I've seen him come on as a sub he has completely changed the game for the good

Chelsea dominating the possession, but that's not really showing in terms of territory. A signal there, perhaps, that Newcastle have been generally pretty well organised, despite conceding twice and facing a couple of other significant scares.

Newcastle have got lots of positives to take into the half-time interval, Rafa will maybe be thinking of a change or two.

    Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle

I've never forgotten the time that Lewis spent a large chunk of one episode fretting about the fact that he hadn't been to the dentist for 20 years. How that one got past script conference, I've no idea. Anyway, here are the thoughts of Danny Murphy...

And there were have it. Three goals, and yet it was a curious first half; frantic bursts of action punctuating long spells of not very much. It was a bit like watching an episode of Lewis, in that respect.

    Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle

Eden Hazard is off on a run, and looking dangerous. Newcastle captain Ciaran Clark clips him, checks his progress, and accepts the game's first yellow card with minimal complaint. The ensuing free-kick bounces around to no great threat, before drifting off for a goal kick.

Newcastle finally win their first corner, 44 minutes in. Matt Ritchie takes, Marcos Alonso climbs for Chelsea, and the ball comes off a Newcastle man for the goal kick. Rafa Benitez plans his half-time team talk. Two minutes of stoppage time to add.

Rafa did a good job at Chelsea....such hatred from the southern glory hunters baffles me....very sad.. and uncalled for.

Ashley needs to complete the sale of our beloved club and let some proper financial support come in.

Patient stuff from the home side, passing the ball around just inside the Newcastle half, while the visitors sit back, occasionally nipping into a challenge.

Danny Drinkwater seeks to feed a pass through to the running Alvaro Morata, but Chancel Mbemba intercepts.

It won't be long before Jonjo Shelvey gets the hump. If he can't get in this Newcastle team, I'm watching different football. I really am.

    Chelsea 2-1 Newcastle

Chelsea free-kick as Eden Hazard is fouled. Cesc Fabregas delivers, but Dwight Gayle is back to help out in defence and clears.

You never know in football (and I've been proved wrong many times before), but it feels as if Newcastle's best bet here is to get to half-time 2-1 down and regroup.

deldude: Seems Gayle likes making the Big boys angry he opened scoring at Old Trafford, same at Stamford Bridge today....and the rest is history

David Williamson: To the fan who said he didn't want anything to do with Liverpool at his club I assume he includes atmosphere and history.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is pretty cross on the touchline. As he shouts instructions to his players, the ball comes to him and he slices it back into play. He didn't leave his technical area, though, before anyone asks.

Danny Drinkwater veers a long-ranger wide with the outside of the right boot. Chelsea, after their early troubles, looking well set now.

Victor Moses drills a ball across, it's about four yards out and I don't think you can blame the goalkeeper or defender. It's a bullet of a cross. Alvaro Morata doesn't need to move or crouch, he just heads it in. It's a proper striker's goal, It's where you expect him to be.

    Alvaro Morata

    Alvaro MorataImage source, Reuters

A moment to forget for Matt Ritchie as Chelsea go ahead. Ritchie's weak defensive header on the left goes straight to Victor Moses, who crosses for Alvaro Morata to head in his 10th of the season from about three yards. Newcastle's defenders are falling down all over the place as Morata heads in. Not great defensive play all round, that. Clinical finish, though.
