Everton are dropping too deep, you've got to press this Liverpool side.

All Pickford is doing is launching the ball forward...obviously those are his instructions, but it's not working.

Jordan Pickford is a very good passer of the ball but so far his pass completion is just 16%, which is basically the same as playing blindfold and just smashing it in a random direction each time.

Wayne Rooney has to defend well against Andrew Robertson and the Scot can't find a cross, Mo Salah then has a shot blocked as Liverpool try and step on the gas.

Wayne Rooney then smashes a ball 60 yards downfield to absolutely nobody. This is a remarkable start from the visitors.

The first opening! Mo Salah finds space on the right and stands up a fine cross, it misses out the me in the middle but James Milner arrives on it and hits the volley - well blocked!

The snow is falling heavily now as a long ball over the top works for Everton this time, Oumar Niasse into space and Simon Mignolet commits to coming out and winning the challenge, which he does.

Jordan Pickford kicks it clean out of play again. The pattern of play is set. It's a very low key, low tempo start. Liverpool had already put Spartak Moscow away by this stage in midweek.

I'm a little bit disappointed not to see Coutinho and Firmino in the starting line-up for Liverpool.

But I'm very happy to see Dominic Solanke given a chance, what an opportunity to make a name for himself.

Southampton

Mauricio Pellegrino, speaking to MOTD: "When you play against Arsenal you need to be 100 per cent excellent at almost everything.

"We didn't control the ball much but we controlled the game. We had to reduce the space because they have quality in key areas, we competed well but it's a pity we conceded at the end.

"We are upset about that but it's part of football. Against Arsenal, in one action, everything can change."

That can't be true can it?! Must be more countries than that who aren't tuned in. Let's hope it's a better game than the one I'm already imagining.

At Anfield, Dominic Solanke does well to nick the ball off Ashley Williams and the move ends with Jordan Henderson shooting over.

Williams and Mason Holgate are the starting centre-backs - Michael Keane and Phil Jagielka only on the bench for Everton.
