To have any chance of beating City we needed to play like we did last week against Arsenal. Attack City and get stuck into them. Lukaku needs to step up for the big games. Tailor made for Zlatan to come off the bench and use his guile.

Ilkay Gundogan certainly looks like he's coming on. He's just been going through instructions on a clipboard.

  4. 'The object was to frustrate them'published at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2017

    Liverpool 1-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Sam Allardyce, speaking to MOTD: "They've scored 12 goals in their last two games so the object was to frustrate them and they created minimal chances for such a talented outfit.

"We were disappointed that in possession we were extremely poor, especially in the first half, so I had to make two changes and change the shape.

"We showed a tremendous defensive application to the game, waiting for an opportunity and then Wayne Rooney produced the sort of pass that would expose the Liverpool defence.

"I don't think you can disagree with the penalty - Lovren pushed Calvert-Lewin over.

"[Jurgen Klopp can] moan all he wants, it's a penalty. If you push somebody in the box - our player is goal side, so if he's not touched, he doesn't go over but he was touched, he goes over and it's a penalty.

"It's an extremely brave decision to give that for us in a derby at Anfield and the referee got it right."

Ilkay Gundogan is going through an intensive half-time warm-up. Coming on?City will equal the all-time English top-flight league record of 14 consecutive victories if they win today; set by Arsenal between February and August 2002.

That first-half wasn't as vibrant as I thought it was going to be. But it goes to show that if you can get that City back four then you can get something.

The City fans have been signing to the home supporters 'you're scared of us' and when you consider how isolated Lukaku has been, it has looked like a top team outplaying a team who simply don't want to be beaten.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is fuming and who can blame him, In total control, a goal up and defensive sloppiness changes the mood.

Jose Mourinho might have settled for only being one down. Now United are right back in it.

    Liverpool 1-1 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Sam Allardyce, speaking to Sky Sports: "A huge point because we didn't create much in posession, which was very frustrating with the quality of players we have.

"We were maybe a bit tentative at the start of the game and that set the tone, but our defensive shape was extremely good today and we stopped one of the most fluent attacking sides in Europe at the moment.

"They had to score a brilliant goal to go 1-0 up, but then we've utterly shut them down and waited for just one opportunity to strike.

"The referee was very brave giving the decision - we've seen those not given but it was the right decision. Some we get and some we don't but I've had a look at it and I think it's clear. But what's clear?

"There's no such thing as a soft penalty. It's either a penalty or it isn't. No matter how small, it's an infringement on our player.

"We got a result on the back of us being able to shut down Liverpool and them not being able to break us down.

"I'm sure the fans would like to see us play better but they will be happier with a point than us playing better but losing 3-0."

GOAL - Manchester United 1-1 Manchester Citypublished at 45 mins

    Marcus Rashford

    Right back in it!

Out of nothing the hosts level and it's an error from Fabian Delph. He's been largely excellent filling in at full-back for City but that's a clanger. A ball sweeps in from the right, no danger, but Delph tries to chest it and misses the ball altogether.

It runs into the path of Marcus Rashford on the right of the area and he steers into the far corner first-time, a really confident finish.

That goal is thoroughly deserved for Manchester City.

It was a great corner in, if poorly defended by United. Ashley Young was playing Silva onside and the Spaniard gambled before hooking it in.

City are dominant, United look clueless.

  15. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 45 mins

    Manchester United 0-1 Manchester City

A second half-hearted penalty appeal for City - David de Gea fluffs his clearance, Leroy Sane drives into the box and goes down - nothing given!

United have a shot on goal for the first time, Anthony Martial cuts in from the left and drills in low and hard - regulation for Ederson though. Straight at him.

    Manchester United 0-1 Manchester City

I can't imagine David Silva has scored too many goals from corners. Can United respond? They win a corner but it comes to nothing.

In fact City then break and have men over, this is a chance - Kevin de Bruyne plays a poor pass! Unheard of.

  18. goal

GOAL - Manchester United 0-1 Manchester Citypublished at 43 mins

    David Silva

You can't say it hasn't been coming! The leaders are deservedly ahead though not in the fashion you'd imagine.

Kevin de Bruyne's corner is flicked on by either Nicolas Otamendi or Romelu Lukaku, it drops for David Silva onside and he hooks in another acrobatic volley.

Two in two league games for the City legend.

I admire the sheer defensive brilliance and efficiency of Mourinho teams. However I hope for the sake of football that Man City win today.

    Sam, Arsenal fan

As a neutral who grew up watching united dominate English football in the 90s & 00s, I find it strangely difficult to see City outplaying them. United have built a global brand over years of hard work and success but City have been bankrolled for all of theirs.

    Lee, Gloucester

Awful tactics on show here from United. We aren’t even playing football - route one and counter attacking football at home! We are just inviting the leagues top scorers to grab a goal, it’s only a matter of time. We have Lukaku, Rashford, and Martial up front and we aren’t even attempting to use them! Poor. Feel sorry for The United fans who have paid to watch this from us.

  20. GREAT SAVE!published at 43 mins.

    Manchester United 0-0 Manchester City

David de Gea's first big save of the day, Ashley Young misjudges a cross, gets under the ball and Leroy Sane is able to shoot from a very tight angle. De Gea palms it over.
