  1. CLOSE!published at 10 mins

    Astana 0-0 Celtic (agg 0-5)

Patrick Twumasi, who was Astana's best player in Glasgow, has a pop from distance and his shot skids narrowly wide, although the diving Craig Gordon looked to have it covered.

    Astana 0-0 Celtic (agg 0-5)

Celtic are content to knock it about on the artificial surface and Astana are standing off.

Two crosses from overlapping full-back Kieran Tierny cause problems for the hosts, James Forrest getting his head to the second but unable to trouble the keeper.

I was expecting Astana to come out like Tasmanian Devils as they chase a footballing miracle but it's been a bit lethargic from the hosts so far.

  4. KICK-OFFpublished at 1 min

    Astana 0-0 Celtic (agg 0-5)

And we're off. Leigh Griffiths is in on goal straight away and drills an angled effort wide - from an offside position it turns out.

Does anyone fancy a miracle recovery from the hosts?

    Didn't think so...

Not even Astana boss Stanimir Stoilov.

Speaking yesterday, the Bulgarian said: "I have to be realistic. Celtic are 99% through to the group stages of the Champions League.

"We will do everything to win the game. We always play to win at home - we don't want to lose."

"We have the Champions League flag, the instantly recognisable music and a pretty noisy stadium, here in Astana. All that's missing is the jeopardy.

"Astana must pile forward from the first whistle in their mission impossible. It'll be interesting to see how the makeshift centre-half pairing of Ajer and Bitton cope."

It's a big decision [to play Kristoffer Ajer] and obviously Brendan Rodgers wants to take no chances with Jozo Simunovic. He didn't play at the weekend [in the win against Kilmarnock] and out here tonight he's not playing. So that's going to challenge them both because it's a new partnership; both [Ajer and Nir Bitton] are not traditional centre-halves. I don't expect Astana to play any differently than they did at Celtic Park."

It's got to be a real professional performance again. It's up to Celtic to try and keep the tempo down, keep the crowd down. This will be a good test.

There have been a few big European recoveries involving British teams over the years.

In 1985, QPR threw away a 6-2 Uefa Cup lead, going out on away goals to Partizan Belgrade after losing the second leg 4-0.

Ten years earlier, in the European Cup, Derby County beat Real Madrid 4-1 only to be hammered 5-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Further back, Hibernian suffered a 4-1 loss to Napoli in the 1967 Fairs Cup, before winning 5-1 at Easter Road.

The legendary Dino Zoff was in goals for the visitors that night but obviously managed to put it behind him.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells BT Sport Jozo Simunovic is carrying a knock.

"We didn't feel he was fit enough to do himself justice," he says.

"The surface is quite good for Astroturf, if he was fit he could have played.

"I have trust in my squad and this is a game when you just want to get the job done."

Celtic gave it a good go that evening in 2005 but the fact remains no team has ever recovered from a 5-0 deficit in European competition.

There have been a few four-goal comebacks, with Barcelona serving up a stunner last season. They roared back from 4-0 down to win their round of 16 tie against Paris Saint Germain 6-5 on aggregate.

    Artmedia Bratislava.

Two words to send shivers down the spines of Celtic fans to this day.

The Slovakian side ruined Gordon Strachan's first competitive match in charge with a 5-0 thumping in a Champions League second qualifying round tie in 2005.

And then Celtic almost turned it round. Almost...

A stirring 4-0 victory in Glasgow saw them fall just short.

Celtic also came out on top in their only other tie against opposition from Kazakhstan, turning round a 2-0 first-leg loss at Shakhter Karagandy in the 2013-14 play-offs with a dramatic 3-0 victory in Glasgow.

There was another last-gasp goal that evening, with James Forrest the hero.

Of course, these two met last season in the previous qualifying round and it was a very close encounter.

A 1-1 draw in Kazakhstan was followed by a 2-1 win in Glasgow; Leigh Griffiths scored in both matches, with Moussa Dembele's 90th-minute penalty in the second leg proving decisive.

Celtic rode their luck at times in Kazakhstan last year, with Craig Gordon much the busier goalkeeper.

Celtic are looking to reach the group stage for a tenth time. Twelve months ago they beat Hapoel Beer-Sheva 5-4 on aggregate at this stage following a nervy 2-0 defeat in the second leg in Israel.

A 2-0 reverse today would qualifying as skooshing it...

It's a long journey to Kazakhstan but Celtic benched several regulars for last Saturday's win at Kilmarnock, while Astana will be well rested after their routing in Glasgow since they were excused from league duty at the weekend.

After 23 matches, Astana top the table by four points with a game in hand as they chase a fourth successive title.
