More from Chris Coleman to Sky Sports, speaking about his future: "All I can think about right now is the faces of the players in the dressing room and their disappointment. They are inconsolable but they should be very proud.

"I will take some time to let the dust settle, we will sit down and have a chat and take it from there.

"This was our first defeat at home for four years. Four years ago we were playing against Macedonia in front of 8,000 players. It is different now.

"Good luck to Martin O'Neill, he has done a tremendous job and I hope he gets them to the World Cup."

  3. 'It hurts, but we will learn from defeat'published at 22:18 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

    Wales 0-1 Republic of Ireland

Wales boss Chris Coleman, speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought on the balance of play we pretty much dominated the first half. We knew Ireland would have a gameplan and they executed it very well. Fair play to them.

"When we lost Joe Allen our creativity suffered. It was difficult to break down 10 men behind the ball. Fair play to the them. Martin O'Neill has done a great job and good luck to them.

"My players have given everything but it wasn't enough in the end to get over the line.

"We knew going into the last four games we would probably have to win the four of them, we got three but just at the final hurdle it was not enough.

"What we have done is another campaign where we have taken it right to the wire. Some you win and some you lose. It will hurt for a bit but you learn from defeat and we will learn from tonight."

    The play-off picture

Some clarity on the teams still waiting for a place in the play-offs.

Slovakia finished second in England's group but must wait to confirm a play-off place. They will be in if Greece do not beat Gibraltar on Tuesday night, and Bosnia and Herzegovina defeat Estonia to finish second in Group H.

  7. Coleman on his way?published at 22:08 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

Wales manager Chris Coleman will not answer the questions about his immediate future.

Is that the end of his Wales reign though?

I know Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane and the backroom staff and it is no surprise we find ourselves here talking about an Irish victory. I always thought they were capable of getting the result they needed, but they had to score first. Once they go in front they are tough to play against.

All four of James McClean’s goals in these qualifiers came in the second half of away matches.

McClean scored the winning goal in three different matches for Ireland in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers – without his goals, they would have been six points worse off.

When you see all the joy and emotion here - let's remember that Ireland are not there yet.

There is still an awful long way to go.

Ultimately we were not quite good enough on the night.

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill, speaking to Sky Sports: "So proud. The players were magnificent playing away from home at a very good Welsh side. To win on their territory was a great result for us.

"That last half hour seemed an eternity. We had to withstand pressure but we knew at some stage we would have to try to win the game and we did it. The goal was worthy of winning any game.

"We are in the play-offs. Whenever the draw is made we will take our chance.

"The impression of our campaign? Absolutely delighted. When the draw was made I thought we had a very difficult group. We have come through, fantastic."

I actually think only Chris Coleman can answer the question over his own future.

Personally I think he will walk away now - I do not think he will be short of offers.

I think he will be lined-up for a big job if that is what he wants.

  14. 'We will enjoy tonight'published at 21:58 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

Matchwinner James McClean, speaking to Sky Sports: "The fans were unbelievable. A lot of people ruled us out and didn't give us a chance tonight but we went there and showed character.

"I remember it coming across, a great dummy by Harry Arter, I was just thinking keep it down and when it hit the back of the net there is no better feeling in football.

    "We will enjoy tonight."

  15. 'A dangerous under-dog'published at 21:56 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

    Wales 0-1 Republic of Ireland

    Andy Townsend
Ex-Republic of Ireland international on BBC Radio 5 live

We are not going to be one of the seeded teams - so we will be playng at home first.

We have not been that great at home and we are not always the best when we have to be on the front foot asking questions, tonight worked like a treat for us for those reasons and it might work for us in the play-offs.

Ireland are a dangerous under-dog in any game because they don't give a lot away.

  16. Unseeded?published at 21:55 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

    Wales 0-1 Republic of Ireland

This man says that Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will not be seeded.

And his twitter bio says, and I quote, "Knows far too much about permutations, coefficients and regulations for it to be healthy."

Gareth Bale is massively influential for Wales, pivotal, and to miss him for the last two games...but I do not want to make excuses and the Irish were magnificent.

    Of course we missed Gareth.

Wales have won just one of their last 11 matches against Republic of Ireland (W1 D4 L6) and none of the last eight.

This victory means that Republic of Ireland ended the 2018 World Cup qualifiers unbeaten away from home (W3 D2 L0).

When Wales lost Joe Allen, upon reflection perhaps Chris Coleman might have introduced somebody else rather than taking Aaron Ramsey away from the forward area of the field.

I felt that was a bit of a let-off for Ireland.

  20. Postpublished at 21:50 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

Who could the Republic get in the play-offs? It's too early to say. But with a world ranking of 34 they are not going to be one of the four seeded sides.
