Straight off the training ground that one. Chester knows exactly where he is running, he gets a good header but hits the side netting.

    Good move by Wales.

  2. CLOSE!published at 51 mins

    Wales 0-0 Republic of Ireland

Joe Ledley's cross from the left is good before Chris Gunter wins a corner. There's the noise! The crowd had gone quiet for the first real time all night.

Oh and that's close! James Chester flicks a header into the side-netting. Gareth Bale thought that was in up in the boxes...

Wales did a lot of good things in the first half without end product. That will have been the message at half-time, can we throw a few more bodies forward?

...how many times have we started a sentence with those words this week?

While members of the media bash away at their laptops to check the latest scores, you can see fans doing the same with their phones.

As things stand, Wales would be in the play-offs. Win and they'd top Group D, as leaders Serbia are goalless at half-time against Georgia.

    Wales 0-0 Republic of Ireland

Ireland lump a free-kick forwards and Shane Duffy attacks it as if his very life depends on it. A tremendous win, but the ball can only skim into the hands of Wayne Hennessey. Wales then attack down their left but Hal Robson-Kanu gifts a free-kick to Ireland.

    Edgy, cagey.

Here we go then, back in play in Cardiff.

  7. Postpublished at 20:46 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

    Wales 0-0 Republic of Ireland

A draw is enough for Wales at the moment but they will surely go for the win in the second half. Ireland need a win, that's the only result in town for them.

Martin O'Neill has Aiden McGeady, Scott Hogan, Callum O'Dowda, Wes Hoolahan, Conor Hourihane and Sean Maguire as attacking options on his bench...

  8. PENALTY APPEAL?published at 20:43 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

    Wales 0-0 Republic of Ireland

I missed this one at the time but there was half a penalty shout for Wales as Hal Robson-Kanu was having a shirt tugged by Ciaran Clark.

Insert cliche here but 'if you give that you'd have to give...' etc

    Wales 0-0 Republic of Ireland

If you're just tuning in, a quick reminder:

If Wales win, they are at least in the play-offs, and could win Group D depending on how Serbia get on.

If the Republic of Ireland win, they are at least in the play-offs, and could win Group D depending on how Serbia get on.

If it's a draw, Wales will finish second in the group but may not be in the play-offs. Ireland will be out.

Not many goals around across Europe.

Gylfi Sigurdsson's goal for Iceland against Kosovo is currently sending them to the finals in Russia as winners of Group I.

Macedonia lead Lichtenstein 2-0 in a battle between the bottom two in Group G.

It is Serbia 0-0 Georgia in the other game that has meaning at the top of Group D.

With regard to the play-off positions, Croatia and Ukraine - two sides who could push Wales or Republic of Ireland to ninth in the standings and out of the picture - are drawing 0-0.

Nothing to be afraid of. I am sure that is the message Martin O'Neill will give to his players. This isn't a team with Gareth Bale. Nothing to be afraid of and if they up it 10% they could cause problems.

Wales have passed it brilliantly, there is lots of movement. The one criticism I would have of Wales' performance is to get more support up for Hal Robson-Kanu, but in terms of the way they have played, the way they have coped with Ireland's physical presence, Chris Coleman will be relatively happy.

Unlucky. Good work by Robbie Brady. It was a tight angle and he hits it straight at Wayne Hennessey but that was better.

David Meyler gets on the ball as Ireland end the half with extended possession, it gets worked out to Robbie Brady on the right and is able to hit a shot at Wayne Hennessey.

Daryl Murphy buys his side a free-kick on halfway. Good centre-forward play that. Martin O'Neill will feel this half has gone by the book so far.

Iceland lead Kosovo. Gylfi Sigurdsson's goal has put them in control and eyeing a very first appearance at the World Cup finals. They top Group I by four points as it stands.

Ireland have a throw, a long one too. In she comes, cleared, cleared again.

Not pretty but it's very engaging. I wonder how this game would go down in Spain or Italy.
