That's all from me on a sobering night for the Scottish champions. Bayern Munich were light years better and Celtic just couldn't live with their pace and intensity.

The visitors contributed to their own downfall with some sloppy defending for the goals and were just too meek in the first 45 minutes.

Can they make amends with a stirring show against the same opponents in Glasgow at the end of the month?

As many predicted before a ball was kicked, it looks like a straight fight with Anderlecht for third place and a Europa League spot. Celtic are in the driving seat there after their win in Brussels, so it's not all doom and gloom.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers won't be going for a 4-6-0 formation any time soon by the sounds of things in his post-match media conference.

"I think we decide how we play," he says. "There was nothing about being pragmatic for the goals that we conceded. We didn’t defend our box well enough from the crosses coming in and we can do better with those.

"I’d rather lose a game playing how we want to play and how we want to work as opposed to sitting in and defending for 90 minutes and still lose if that’s the case. Myself and my staff and the players, we had a plan going into the game. There was lots of positives for us and something for us to look forward to for the second game against them at Celtic Park."

Celtic can't afford to feel sorry for themselves after this harsh lesson in Munich because they have a big game coming up on Saturday.

He's had a grumble about the scheduling but Brendan Rodgers must now lift his squad for a lunchtime kick off with Hibs at Hampden in the League Cup semi-final.

Those two played out a cracking 2-2 draw in the league last month.

Will Celtic, the trophy holders, take their unbeaten domestic run to 60 games at the weekend?

Speaking to BT Sports, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said: "Disappointed with the goals. There were lots of moments in the game when we looked comfortable. At times when we went into their half we looked very good.

"Lots of the game I was really pleased with.

"Once they get the first goal it gives them the confidence. In the goals we could have been better than we were.

"The guys gave an honest performance and I was happy with that. We have to respect where we are in terms of the players we're playing against. Hopefully at home we can be better, create our chances and take them."

"We were a little bit unlucky the way we’ve managed to try and keep the ball but they’re a quality side and that’s what happens when you come over here at times," Celtic captain Scott Brown tells BT Sport.

"We tried to put them under pressure. We tried to play our own game. We had to try and keep the ball and create chances and we had a couple of chances that we were a little bit unlucky with, especially in the second half.

"It’s mentally tough but you have to keep working hard. You’ve got to keep compact. We can’t give up because it could be seven, eight, nine - nothing if we do.

"The possession wasn’t maybe as good as it could have been but we’ve tried to play our game and that’s what you have to do in the Champions League and that’s why we try to get better every season as it goes on and that's what the manager wants us to do."

Brendan Rodgers talked about a "positive mindset" and scoring goals away from home in yesterday's media conference but is that the right approach?

Losing Jozo Simunovic to injury is unfortunate and the Celtic manager's defensive options were limited but was the team set up properly? Would a stuffy 5-4-1 have made any difference?

Bayern Munich boast a formidable record on their own patch. That's 11 consecutive victories in Champions League group games since a 3-2 defeat by Manchester City in December 2013.

Tonight's result was never in doubt, with Celtic fortunate not to be behind before Thomas Muller made the breakthrough on 17 minutes.

There probably should have been more goals for Bayern Munich for the amount of possession and chances that they’ve had. Celtic will happy to get out of it with 3-0. They made a couple of chances late on in this game which will give them a little bit of confidence maybe for the return, but they’ve got to come up with some better plan than what they had tonight. They’ve got to defend better but they’ve also got to have some sort of plan that when they have the ball they just can’t keep giving it away when they’re under pressure.

Angel Di Maria rounds off a good night for Group B leaders Paris St-Germain as they see off Anderlecht 4-0 to maintain their 100% record.

The final whistle puts Celtic out of their misery on another chastening night in Europe. The visitors might have got a goal back as Bayern took their foot off the pedal late on and left a few gaps at the back but it was a very one-sided contest.

Thomas Muller and Joshua Kimmich scored in the first half, with Mat Hummels adding a simple header from a corner.

Craig Gordon has been kept very busy this evening and the Celtic keeper saves his best for last as he somehow keeps out a powerful header from Thomas Muller.

Three minutes of stoppage-time signalled as Celtic prepare to take a corner. Moussa Dembele gets something on it and Scott Brown, one of several offside players, can only touch it on to the post from three yards.

Bayern have been a bit slack over the past five minutes or so but Arturo Vidal sparks the hosts back into life with a fizzing striker that flashes just wide.

The Chile international then hammers a shot straight at Craig Gordon from a ball over the top. He really should be scoring from there; just near the penalty spot.

Scott Sinclair curls a cracker into the far corner but it doesn't count since he was a fraction offside as he gathers a scuffed pass from Moussa Dembele.

Lots of lessons to be learned again tonight. Simple lessons. Defending lessons. You’ve got to really do something about the defending side of the game. We know that they can play but when you can’t defend, up against a really good team, you’ll lose goals and they'll create chances off of it.
